Dear friends,

Raif Badawi was arrested in Saudi Arabia five years ago this week, just because he expressed his ideas – he took to his keyboard and started a website that promoted religious freedom.

For this, he received the harsh sentence of 10 years in prison and 1,000 unspeakably cruel lashes. He has served five years and suffered 50 lashes with the threat of 950 more looming.

On this sad anniversary, Amnesty is working with Badawi’s family — his wife Ensaf Haidar and his three children who live in Sherbrooke, Canada — to help free Raif. We aim to mobilize people to tweet King Salman of Saudi Arabia and Saudi embassies around the world, demanding Raif’s release. The king and his government are very active on Twitter, which is widely used in Saudi Arabia and is a key tool for Saudi Arabians to share information and ideas and engage in debates.

We rely on donations from people like you to help us free prisoners like Raif who have had their lives ripped apart by oppressive governments. We don’t accept money from governments or corporations for our campaigns. Please donate and show your support for Raif and his family.

In a video produced by Amnesty International, Badawi’s youngest daughter Myriam says, “We’ve waited too long. We need to see our father.”

With support from people like you, we can free Raif.

Thank you.
