Drugged tigers and cowering baby elephants

Dear friends,
Every week, it seems like there's another story about zoos neglecting or treating their captive wildlife horribly. Unfortunately, sometimes these zoos are actually members of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) รข€“ which is supposed to ensure member zoos are providing humane care and wildlife conservation.
Recently, elephant trainers at the Hanover Zoo were caught on video using rough treatment with whips and bullhooks on three-year-old elephants, forcing the animals to cringe and cower in order to "train" them. Before that, video showed a clearly drugged tiger being posed for photos with tourists at the Taman Safari in Indonesia.
What do those facilities have in common? They are both members in good standing of WAZA.
WAZA membership is supposed to help keep animals safe and well cared-for. Clearly in these examples, it is failing. Even worse are the thousands of zoos that are not members, so WAZA does next to nothing to help wild animals suffering in those facilities.
Care2 super activist Poh Yee Holmes has started a petition to demand WAZA do more for animals. Sign her petition and tell WAZA to crack down on members who are abusing animals and help local activists and authorities shut down cruel zoos.
If enough of us sign on and speak out, we can convince WAZA to do more to help suffering captive wildlife.
Thank you for taking action,
 Aaron V.
