DELIGHT YOURSELF IN THE LORD!

We Christians know that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, Son of David. The title “Son of David” applied to Jesus Christ forms part of the backbone of the Gospel. In the Annunciation, the Virgin received this message: “And the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and He will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end” (Lk 1:32-33). The destitute that begged Jesus to cure them, were saying: “Son of David, have mercy on me!” (Mk 10:48). When Jesus solemnly entered in Jerusalem He was acclaimed: “Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest” (Mk 11:10).

But Jesus is not only the son of David, He is also the Lord. He confirms it solemnly by quoting the Davidic Psalm 110. St. Peter, witness of Jesus’ resurrection, clearly saw that Jesus had been constituted “Lord of David”, because “Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day...but Jesus God rose up, whereof we all are witnesses” (Acts 2:29-32).

Today Jesus tries to deepen the understanding of the Jews about the Messiah or the Christ. The Messiah will be a new David, ruling over his kingdom; but He will reign forever over an eternal kingdom, as the angel Gabriel announced to Mary (Lk 1:32-33; Is 9:7). He will be the Son of God by nature, and will therefore be God himself, equal to the Father, having the same divine nature as the Father.

“The great crowd heard this with delight.”(Mark 12:37). Jesus’ teaching produced much pleasure in their souls. This fact begs the question, “Do I delight in Jesus’ words?” Too often we see the words of Christ as a burden, restriction or limitation to what we want in life. The delight of the Lord is something that continually draws us higher and fulfills us more deeply every day. Let us allow ourselves to be filled with delight in the Lord’s presence and His words. Once “hooked,” we will seek Him all the more.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, Son of David, I desire to delight in You. Help me to turn away from the many attractions and enticements of this world. Help me to seek You and Your Word always. Fill my soul with the greatest delight. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.
