Australia: Shark Culls and Drum Lines Threaten Wildlife

Dear friends,
Shark culls and drum lines — bait traps used to reduce shark attacks — threaten wildlife including sharks, turtles and dolphins. Hundreds of animals were tangled in shark nets between 2015 and 2016. Of the victims, 86% were threatened, protected, or not even targeted by the nets.
Australia needs to change the classification of these ineffective control methods, or else endangered grey nurse sharks and loggerhead turtles could be wiped out for good. These methods could also drive hammerhead sharks and tiger sharks to threatened status.
Australia's federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act includes a list of activities that could push species to endangerment. Shark culls and drum lines clearly threaten several species — it's time these deadly control methods were listed and banned.
We need as many signatures as we can get to make our message clear. The Australian government needs to step up on protection of ocean wildlife. Shark culls and drum lines are not the answer.
Thank you,
 Alex B.
