MOTHER MARY VISITS US

Today is the feast of the Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. We ponder this event of our salvation history as one of the joyful mysteries during our Rosary. Mary having received the greatest Good News went in haste to share her joy with her cousin. More than a mere formal visit, Mary stayed there in order to serve and assist her cousin, who was in need of her help. She really cared for her.

Like Mary and Elizabeth, we need to share our joys, sorrows, cares and concerns, be kind enough to utter a word of encouragement, a word of consolation, an assurance of prayer etc., to those who are in trouble and distress. The two great women of today’s feast are shining examples for us all. All the more in our world where man becomes more and more selfish in his out-look, attitudes and life style.

On the other hand the song of Mary asserts the attitude we need to have in our spiritual journey. Unlike us, the Blessed Virgin Mary attributes everything to God. It would suffice to analyze how many times her prayers refer to God. In her song the words like He, Almighty, Lord, God, Savior, Holy One, Mighty One etc. indicate clearly that Mary’s life was a life of faith and was centered on God alone. The more she realizes His greatness and mercy the more she realizes her nothingness. How wonderful it would be if we learn to empty ourselves day by day of our false self and allow the person of Christ to grow in us!

Mother Mary is the Queen of those striving for holiness. She continues to carry out her unique role of visiting those in need on a daily basis. We are able to have a relationship with her by which she communicates to us countless mercies from her Son. The relationship we are now able to have with our Blessed Mother by grace is far deeper and more profound than the relationship Elizabeth was able to have with her on account of the Visitation. She visited Elizabeth long ago and now desires to visit your soul so as to bring you the grace and mercy of her Son. Invite her in, listen to her, be open to the grace she brings to you and rejoice with Elizabeth that the mother of your Lord would come to you.

Prayer: Dearest Mother Mary, I love you and consecrate my life to You, trusting in your motherly care and mediation. Help me, dear Mother, to be open to all that you desire to bring to me from your Son, Jesus. I am honored and humbled that you would care for me and desire to bring to me the mercy of the Heart of your Son Jesus. Mother Mary, pray for us. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen
