Brevity is said to be the soul of wit.

At age 17, I was required to memorize various pieces of English literature in school and then write them out verbatim in class, once each week. Little did I realize how profound this simple act would be to the rest of my life, now 57 years later...

The most impactful piece of all to me was the sonnet "Let me not to the marriage of true minds (Sonnet 116)" by William Shakespeare. To me this pair of lines (below) in the sonnet says succinctly all one ever needs to know about love:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The whole sonnet is here

PS - many people say that Shakespeare was the first psychologist for the pointing out in his works the ways in which the human mind functions...
