Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford will be nominated for a second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Pentagon announced today.
The Defense Department also announced Air Force Gen. Paul Selva will be nominated for a second term as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
Dunford has served as Joint Chiefs chairman since September 2015. The Joint Chiefs chairman serves a two-year term, which may be renewed. Dunford's reappointment must be confirmed by the Senate.
Prior to becoming Joint Chiefs chairman, Dunford served as Marine Corps commandant, the service's top officer. Dunford also served as assistant commandant from 2010 to 2012 as well as the top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan from 2013 to 2014. He was first commissioned in 1977.
Selva, who has served as Joint Chiefs vice chairman since July 2015, was previously the commander of the U.S. Transportation Command.
