By Campaña por la Libertard de Rafael Braga Follow the campaign webpage and Facebook
(Portuguese) ---- #LibertemRafaelBraga - Rafael Braga Vieira is a black and poor young
man, who, until June of 2013, worked collecting material for recycling in downtown streets
of Rio de Janeiro. He lived in the streets most of the time, to save money on the bus,
returning occasionally to his house in the Vila Cruzeiro favela, where he lived with his
parents, brothers and sisters. However, on June 20, Rafael Braga's routine changed. ----
On that day, in Rio de Janeiro, was happening the largest of the demonstrations that
occurred in 2013 against bus fare increases. During the dispersion of the crowd, in
Lavradio Street, Lapa, Rafael Braga, 25 years old, was arrested when he arrived at an
abandoned mansion, where he used to sleep. Rafael did not participate the demonstration,
and carried with him two different cleaning products, both on plastic bottles. At the
police station, the policemen who seized him presented both bottles already open, with
cloths. He was accused of carrying explosive material - Molotov cocktails.

Rafael spent 5 months in Japeri Penitentiary Complex awaiting trial, being defended by a
public defender. On September 23, an application for revocation of Rafael's preventive
custody was made by his lawyer and dismissed by the Judge of the 32nd Criminal Court after
4 days, only. On December 2, 2013, he was sentenced to a 5 years and 10 months
imprisonment and was transferred to Bangu 5 a few days later, even after the Civil Police
bomb squad report stated that Rafael was carrying cleaning products that had low chances
to function as a molotov cocktail.

Rafael Braga's condemnation had an impact, even if small, on newspaper articles, and, from
then on, activists, militants and collectives became aware that he was still imprisoned.
Thus, Rafael's defense was assumed by the Institute of Human Rights Defenders (Instituto
dos Defensores de Direitos Humanos - DDH). At the same time, some groups and activists of
social movements began to articulate to help and publicize Rafael's case in the
independent media.

Participants in a teacher training workshop on Angela Davis at the Federal University of
ABC show their support for the #LibertemRafaelBraga campaign.
After assuming the case, DDH Office filed an appeal against the sentence. On August 26
2014, the Third Criminal Chamber of the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro (TJRJ) decided
to keep Rafael in jail, reducing his sentence in only four months. On that day, a "walking
hours" demonstration occurred in front of TJRJ, from the 25th until the time that the
decision came out on the 26th.

In October 2014, there was a progression of Rafael's regime from closed to semi-open, when
he could leave the prison to work. After several efforts, DDH got a job for him at a law
firm. In November 2014, Rafael was punished after one of his lawyers posted online a photo
of him in front of a "pixação" on a wall that read: "You only look from the left to the
right, while the State crushes you from top to bottom". The lawyer took Rafael's picture
on the way back to the prison after a day's work. Because of this, he spent about 1 month
in SOLITARY. After suffering some penalties and losing the right to the semi-open regime,
he gained progression to an open regime on December 1 2015, and left prison, being
monitored by an electronic anklet.

So he returned home, to Cascatinha, Vila Cruzeiro, with his family. On January 12 2016,
Rafael, by his mother's, request left by morning to go to the bakery, when some UPP
(Peacemaker Police Unity) military police officers (PMs) approached him on his way. The
PMs said he was involved with drug trafficking and asked him to give them information and
that he admitted he was involved. He was beaten on the way to the police station and
threatened with rape in case he did not take part in the dealing association. The PMs
accused Rafael with a fake blatant kit containing 0.6g of marijuana, 9.3g of cocaine and
one firework. Since then, Rafael answers for: drug dealing; association with the illegal
drug trade; and collaboration with drug traffick.

During April, May and June 2016, occurred a evidentiary and judgment hearing, divided in
three days. On those days, the policemen that approached Rafael, defense witnesses, and
Rafael himself were heard. During the oral testimony, the police officers repeatedly
contradicted each other AND the testimony they had given at the police station at the time
of Rafael's arrest. The DDH requested, during these hearings, 5 diligences: GPS of the
electronic anklet; The name of the engineer and the engineering company whom, according to
the policemen, they were escorting in the favela on that day; Images from the vehicle's
internal and external camera; and images from the UPP camera. The responsible judge denied
every request and sent the case to the Public Prosecutor's Office (Ministério Público -
MP), where it was waiting for the final allegations of accusation and of defense.

On April 20th, 2017, after the allegations were published, the judge condemned Rafael to
11 years in prison for traffcking and traffic association. The defense lawyers will appeal
the sentence.

On April 17, thousands of Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli prisons are on hunger
strike against the inhumane conditions of detention. Torture, the constant confinement in

Therefore, we work to live or live because we work? Everyone repeats to us, whether we are
happy that we have some work at all. Politicians chew over the mantra "who does not work
shall not eat", "no pain no gain" Everybody's after them repeated many frustrated workers
are turning against those who find themselves without work, and those who are in despair
fled from their countries before the war and poverty. They say they want to take us to
work ever again supposedly want to abuse the social system. And these lies that are one
part of the ideology of (wage) labor, are a channel for people frustrated by toil and toil
and nothing. ---- Progress should be a way to get rid of hard work, how to make life
easier for the effort and get more free time. Why is it different reality? Why technology
which mankind has still Drema and spend most of their lives, work that does not meet us?
Maybe it would be different if progress has served man and society in order to facilitate
life, enrich and help fulfill.

But progress serves the profit and aims to intensify and streamline the system of
exploitation from which they profit flows. Workers became the man called. Human resource,
which is the mechanical machines differ in that they have their own resources must provide
for themselves. Must sell himself to the labor market and to ensure its recovery and
maintenance. Without it he could die or live in a serious shortage, and especially the
lost value in the labor market. So we have to sell in order to survive and continue to
sell. Work sucks us, and those who benefit from our work, would have us believe that the
way it should be and there is no alternative. Many resigned to a full life and work for
them become Znouzectnost, he was promoted to an idol. Work has become a myth. And like
other myths serve to enslave those who receive them.

Mark Twain said that if the work was so much fun, the rich would have kept it for himself.
But they gave it to us, and the ideology of work dictated by the current neoliberal
capitalism goes so far as to persuade workers that they are actually entrepreneurs.
Business with their work, abilities and talents that can convert the labor market. Such a
message about the value of work and individual consumption avoids social context and
deliberately atomized society. Atomization is the architect of the ideal state where the
underprivileged are in competition and declining solidarity with the workers and organized
resistance.

Employment has become artificially created need and took the form of a prison from which
we want to escape. It does not mean that they perhaps afraid of work, but we want to work
freely, we want to create things and values in its sole discretion, and in their own way.
We want to useful work, no unnecessary toil. Thus, we reject the current system works just
as senseless consumerism that forms the other side of the coin.

But it is not easy to free themselves from the system work within the capitalist system.
If you want to "do for themselves," it's not just a form of self-exploitation experienced
by many traders and so. Self-employed? A dignified as ever to work in an environment of
capitalist rule? And even if some of us managed to escape from the system work, will not
work on any solutions until the system falls as a whole, along with capitalism, which is
an integral part. And it is not incredible when you realize that capitalists need us to
work for them, but we do not need useless. Exemption from work system must be collective
global movement. Then it may be an economic system subordinate to human needs instead of
the whip to us whizzing over the heads down. Then the freely chosen work in personal and
social benefit.

It is shown that the amount of necessary work, which he divides people are able to
exercise it, does not take more than two to three hours a day, while the rest of the time
we engage in any activity they choose. Activities, or if you want to work that fills us,
frees and develops that benefits not only us but also our surroundings is exactly what we
want. It is something else than work, as we know it today, whether it's paid or performed
without pay.

Destroy the system of work and put their lives on the first place!

Dear Comrades ---- The MACG today distributed its annual May Day Statement at the 8 Hour
Monument in Melbourne: ---- https://melbacg.wordpress.com/2017/05/01/may-day-2017/ ----
The 8 Hour Monument marks the achievement of the 8 Hour Day in Melbourne, the first place
in the world where workers won it.  It is therefore a fitting place to acknowledge the
origins of May Day as we celebrate it. ---- In Solidarity, ---- Ablokeimet ---- for MACG.
---- MAY DAY 2017 ---- Posted on 1 May, 2017    by ablokeimet ---- Origins ---- The first May
Day was a workers' strike and demonstration in Chicago in the United States in 1886. They
were fighting for the eight hour day. Police killed several workers. At a protest meeting
a few days later, someone threw a bomb. Seven police and four workers died from the bomb
or the following police gunfire. Eight Anarchist union officials were framed and four were
executed. The campaign for the exoneration of the Haymarket Martyrs and the release of the
survivors led to May Day now being celebrated around the world as a day of working class
solidarity.

The Current Time

Economically, the advanced countries of the world are descending into stagnation. Despite
years of record low interest rates, they cannot get out of low, even zero, growth.
Meanwhile, the condition of public finances across the advanced countries ranges from poor
to ruinous. In the Third World, the situation isn't as bad, but it is still not as good as
before the Global Financial Crisis. The political fallout is alarming. Leaving aside the
intractable imperialist wars ravaging West Asia, we see the rise of Fascism in most
advanced countries. There is even the possibility of a Fascist being elected President of
France. And in many of the larger Third World countries (e.g. Egypt, India, the
Philippines, Thailand, Turkey) far Right governments are introducing unprecedented
reactionary policies or brutally repressing dissent.

The Current Struggle

Not all the news is bad. Workers continue to struggle in China, driving up wages. The
election of Donald Trump in the United States has sparked widespread resistance, with
varying degrees of militancy. The workers of Brazil have just pulled off a magnificent
general strike, the biggest in a generation. And even here in Australia, the movement to
defend penalty rates is continuing to grow. What is necessary is for workers' struggle to
break out of its narrow national confines, so that the power of transnational companies is
met by the international solidarity of workers. We need a global picket line.

The Future

On May Day we commemorate the past, but we also look to the future. There is no reason to
be confident in capitalist economic recovery. There are many reasons to struggle against
the horrors of oppression, unemployment, environmental devastation and war that capitalism
dishes up. Workers can solve these problems for good. We can make a revolution and, as we
do, the mass democratic workers' organisations we create will be the basis of the new
society, worldwide. In this new society, each will contribute according to their ability
and each receive according to their need. We will have no need of a State apparatus to
enforce the dictates of a privileged elite. We will live a life of peace, freedom and
equality. We have nothing to lose but our chains.

The focus on the Israel-Palestine one apartheid state is more and more in the world media.
The fear of Europe - mainly from the extreme Muslim terror, combined with the B.D.S.
movement, increase the pressure on Israel. Even US call for at least partial retreat from
1967 conquest of the remaining Palestinian region. The sham excuse Israel will retreat
only with final peace agreement in which the Palestinians renounce the right of return of
the 1948 refugees is exposed when even the Hamas agree on 1967 borders. Frustrated from
the Palestinian Authority yielding to the Israeli needs the Fatah opposition initiated the
prisoners hunger strike of 1700 inmates which may ignite a mass revolt of the Palestinians
of the west bank. Meanwhile, the harassment of the non-armed joint struggle of grass root
village activists and the Israeli anarchists against the wall, that was a bit dormant
seems to be ignited again marked with the use live ammunition in Nabi Saleh (taking
advantage of the absent of Israelis).

against the wall (and 2 additional Israelis), 5 volunteers of the red crescent from
Ramalla, and 10 internationals joined the village activists and kids. We marched chanting
from the Abu Lamun oak wood to the gate in the wall. We knocked on the gate, kids climbed
on the wall and tried in vain to force open the gate. The Israeli state forces refused to
respond to the challenge for a long while. We returned to the village with mixed feelings.

3-3-17, 7 Israelis, 10 internationals, and village activists marched in the Friday demo
from Abu Lamun oak wood to the gate in the separation wall. Chanting all the way there and
knocking intensely on the gate when we arrived... but no Israeli state forces came to meet
us. After a long while and a short sightseeing for the internationals we returned to the
village.

10-3-17 Friday, 7 Israelis were blocked from reaching the joint demo by 10 army and police
cars who road-blocked the three roads leading to the village. The demo was as usual
without the participation of the Israeli state forces....but only Bil'iners and
internationals could participate. Israeli forces closed the roads to the village of Bil'in
from all directions to prevent the 7 Israelis who tried to participate.

Rumours say it was a kind of weird reprisal act for the previous night action (of people
not related to the joint struggle) who tried to force open the gate of the separation wall.
After failing to cross the road blocks we could only look from the near by hill the
clashes between Bil'iners and the soldiers of the road block between Kharbata and Bil'in.
A 14 year old youth from Bil'in was arrested in the classes near the road block on the way
from 433 high way and Bil'in.

Bil'in, Friday 17-3-17. 7 Israelis with the anarchists against the wall, more than 20
internationals, and 15 from Ramalla joined the village activists in the weekly demo
against the occupation and the settlers dedicated to the memory of Rachel Corrie (ISM
activist martyred in Rafa).
After converging at the Abu Lamun oak orchard we marched chanting to the near by
separation wall. There we declare our opinions to the near by settlement of Modi'in Elit.
After a while we marched along the wall to the closed gate there we continue the demo for
a long while before returning to the village.

internationals joined the village activists. We converged at the Abu Lamun oak wood at
noon and marched chanting to the gate in the wall. After long knocking on the gate trying

Bil'in, Friday 7-4-17. 9 Israelis with the anarchists against the wall initiative, about
20 international activists, and 20 villagers marched along the separation wall chanting
against the occupation, the separation wall, and the settlers. Only one soldier looked on
us for few minutes and a drone hovering above represented the Israeli armed forces. After

state failed to tear. 11 Israelis with the anarchists against the wall initiative' joined
more than a dozen internationals, and the village people in the march towards the gate in
the wall. A huge bonfire of old tires in front of the gate was a background for a long
gathering and picture taking. A lone armed car of the army passed on the road behind the
wall - activating its siren in a weird announcing of their unseen passing presence.

21-4-17 Friday, the 633th demo against the occupation, the separation fence/wall, and the
settlers in the chain the Israeli state failed to tear. 6 Israelis with the anarchists
against the wall initiative, joined about a dozen of international activists, and the
village people in the march towards the gate in the wall. The theme of the day was
solidarity with hunger strike of the Palestinian prisoners. We marched to the gate in the
wall chanting holding a banner and flags of Marwan Burguty. When we arrived at the gate
only few soldiers were hiding beyond the wall - seen only by youth who climbed on the
wall. A black cloud from a bonfire of old tires in front of the gate was carried to the
near by settlement. After a long vigil we returned to the village.

28-4-17 Bil'in Friday 28-4-17 demo. 8 Israelis with the anarchists against the wall joined
two dozen Palestinians in the 634th demonstration against occupation, separation wall and
settlers. The theme of the day was solidarity with the hunger striking prisoners. The
Israeli soldiers which were murderous in the other demos of the day were were very few and
hide behind the wall so we could not even see them. We marched from the Abu Lamun oak wood
towards the gate in the wall chanting. At the gate a big bonfire of old tiers was lit
hoping the wind will blow the smoke towards the orthodox settlement. Kids climbed the wall
and hanged the Palestinian flag on it. After a long convergence and photographing with the
young children we returned to the village.

Bil'in, Friday 5-5-17 demonstration. 3 Israeli anarchists, and two international activists
joined about 10 activists of the village in the 635th demo against the wall, the
occupation and the settlers. The Israeli forces intended to capture the stone thrower kids
so they left a notice about a closed military zone along the road to the wall and spread
groups of soldiers and border police in the fields between the wall and the route of the
dismantled fence near the village. We marched chanting towards the gate in the wall but
before reaching it we started to return and confronted the invading soldiers in the field.
As there were no throwing stones kids the state force just harassed us threatened us with
arrests because we were in a closed military zone... and detained two of the village
activists.

Hebron

24-2-17 Hundreds marched today for the annual “Open Shuhadaa Street” protest in the
occupied city of Hebron. Shuhadaa street in the old city used to be a lively market place,
but was abruptly shut down by the Israeli military following the Goldstein Massacre of
1994. Barukh Goldstein, a settler and military doctor, fired at Muslim worshippers at the
Ibrahimi mosque in the early hours of 25 February, 1994, killing 29 of them and wounding
another 125. In the wake of subsequent violence, the Israeli military closed Shuhadaa
street to Palestinians, shuttering stores and forcing residents off public spaces. Today,
only Jewish settlers and their guests are allowed to move through the bulk of Shuhadaa
street. Protesters chanted against the ongoing closure, against the ghettoization of
Hebron and the continued settlement project that disrupt the daily lives of Palestinian
civilians. The Israeli army dispersed protesters with barrages of tear gas. No serious

21-4-17 In solidarity with the hunger striking Palestinian political prisoners, residents
of the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh marched and confronted the Israeli army. The strike
was launched on Prisoner’s Day, 17 April, and included thousands of political prisoners of
different factions. The prisoners demand immediate improvement to the conditions of their
incarceration, such as access to education, phones, family visits etc. The Israeli state
retaliated against the leadership of the prisoners, especially against Marwan Barghouti,
by relocating them to different jails and placing them in solitary confinement. Marchers
waved the Fatah flags, chanted against administrative detention, and call for the release
of political prisoners and against the ongoing occupation and land confiscations. The
Israeli army attempted to disperse protesters with tear gas, rubber- and sponge-encased
steel bullets. No major injuries or arrests reported.

Don’t Say We Didn’t Know 540
Settlers from the illegal outpost Havat Ma’on in the South Hebron Hills habitually assault
Palestinian children of the cave-dweller hamlets in the area who are forced to walk close
to the outpost on their way to school in Tawane and back. In 2004 the assailants seriously
wounded two international accompanists. Ever since then, the Israeli army has been
escorting the children. All these years the Israeli police, West Bank region, ‘manages’
not to know of the assaults, nor to arrest the assailants.
On Wednesday, February 15, 2017, the escorting army Jeep did not arrive to do its work and
accompany the children on their way from their school in Tawane back to their hamlets. The
children chose to take the longer way in order to avoid passing by Havat Ma’on. In spite
of their efforts not to run into colonists, these lay in wait for them and attacked.

On Wednesday, February 22, 2017, government agents escorted by police arrived at Bedouin
villages in the Negev, and ploughed grain fields belonging to the Bedouins, in order to
destroy their future crops: In Rahma near Yeruham, and at Al Sadir, west of Ar’ara. They
also demolished a home in Abu Grinat, south of road 25.

Until recently Israeli soldiers were the ones acting to expel Palestinians from the Jordan
Valley. In the past few months, settler-colonists have joined this activity, now living in
new ‘illegal’ outposts erected at Al Hema and Umm Zuka, in the northern Palestinian Jordan
Valley.

On Wednesday March 1, 2017, settler-colonists from Umm Zuka stole four donkeys from
Palestinian shepherds of Al Malih. When required to return them, they admitted that they
had handed over the donkeys to the Civil Administration. Naturally, none of the robbers
has been arrested nor would be brought to court. The Palestinians are required to pay to
get their donkeys back.

On Saturday, March 4, settlers-colonists of the outpost at Al Hema attacked Palestinian
shepherds. Soldiers who arrived late at the scene, arrested a Palestinian instead of the
assailants.

On Tuesday, February 28, 2017, government agents escorted by police demolished Bedouin
homes in the Negev: one near Kseifa, one in Abu Tlul near road 35, and one at Hashem Zana
near Moshav Nevatim.

Don't Say We Didn't Know 542
Settler colonists from the new outpost above the hamlet of Al Hema in the northern
Palestinian Jordan Valley keep threatening and assaulting their Palestinian neighbours.
None of the assailants has been arrested.
On Sunday, March 5, 2017, settler-colonists from the outpost assaulted Palestinian
shepherds of Al Hema..
On Tuesday, March 7, two armed settler-colonists entered Al Hema itself and threatened its
inhabitants. Later they attacked shepherds.
On Friday March 10, settler-colonists came riding on mini-tractors with dogs and chased
shepherds away from their grazing area. This time the shepherds were not escorted by
Israeli or international human rights activists.
***
On Sunday through Tuesday, March 5-7, Israeli government agents escorted by police
destroyed grain crops in Bedouin villages in the Negev: at Umm Batin near road 60, at Al
Fura'a near road 31, and at Rahma near Yeruham and in Wadi Al Na'am south of Beer Sheva.
On Thursday, March 9, they demolished Al Arakib yet again.

Don't Say We Didn't Know 543

On Sunday, March 12, 2017, Palestinians were working, paving an access road to the fields
of Turmus Aya village, located in Area B. Israeli soldiers fired teargas grenades and
'rubber bullets' (metal covered in rubber) without any warning. The workers left. Only
after intervention by the DCO did the soldiers leave and the Palestinians resumed their work.

On Monday and Tuesday, March 13-14, government agents escorted by police came to Bedouins'
fields in the Negev and destroyed their crops - near Nevatim Junction, near Al Sara, Tel
Al Milh (all close to the army base at Nevatim) and at Kseife. On Thursday, March 16, they
destroyed dams with which the Bedouins store rainwater that enables them to cultivate
summer crops- at Tel Arashid, east of the town of Hura, at Um Batin, near Omer, and in Hura.

Don't say we did not know 544

On Wednesday March 22, 2017, Palestinian farmers of the village Bourin went out to
cultivate their lands. Note: this was in coordination with with the Israeli army.
Settler-colonists who came from Yitzhar attacked them. The soldiers did not arrest the
attackers. An army officer demanded of the farmers to leave the area.

Don't Say We Didn't Know 545

On Monday, March 28, 2017, Israeli soldiers came to the Palestinian village of Al-Rifa'iya
(near the town of Yatta in the South Hebron Hills) and demolished a greenhouse, as well as
confiscating the tree saplings that were growing in the nursery.

Don't Say We Didn't Know 546

Settler colonists of Yitzhar, Beracha and their outposts frequently attack the Palestinian
villagers of Bourin.

On Saturday, April 1, 2017, settler colonists from the illegal outpost of Seneh Yaacov
(near Beracha) descended towards the Palestinian village of Bourin. They threw stones at
homes in the village. Soldiers who were present did not prevent the assault nor arrest
them. When youngsters of the village began to throw stones back at them, the soldiers
fired rubber (rubber coated steel pellets) ammunition and teargas and stun grenades at the
Palestinians. The soldiers also grabbed a donkey from Bourin and passed it on to the
settler colonists

    ----  ----  ----  ----.

On Wednesday, April 5, 2017, Israeli government agents escorted by police once more
demolished the Negev Bedouin village of Al Arakib.

Don't Say We Didn't Know 547

On Wednesday,  April 5, 2017, Israeli soldiers came to the Palestinian village of Umm Al
Uber, near Zubeidat, in the northern Palestinian Jordan Valley, and uproot 540 date palm
saplings, just one year old, and  destroyed 30 dunams of melons. A week earlier they
uprooted date palm saplings near Jericho.

  Don't Say We Didn't Know 548

In violation of international law, ten Israeli quarries operate inside the West Bank, and
another is about to be opened.

On Wednesday, April 19, 2017, agents of the Civil Administration escorted by soldiers
handed orders to cease work to a Palestinian quarry owner south of the Palestinian village
of Beit Umar, and confiscated a bulldozer and bugger which they transported to nearby
Israeli settler-colony of Karmei Tzur.

On Thursday, April 20, 2017, Israeli government agents escorted by police came to Bedouin
villages in the Negev for a day of home demolitions. They destroyed two houses at Al
Sayed, near the town of Hura, two homes at at Al Za'arura, east of Kseife, and a house in
Al Fur'a near the Israeli town of Arad.

Don’t Say We Didn’t Know 549

Here is a testimony given by a member of the Jahalin tribe living in Ujja (north of
Jericho), to visitors on tour of the peace movements in the Palestinian Jordan Valley
(Friday, April 28, 2017) as noted by Nurit Popper.

“We have been living in Ujja for 30 years with our sheep and goat flocks. We were living
quietly until 2008. Then trouble began. Settler-colonists from the hilltop outposts above
Ujja began to descend to our grazing areas and threaten and assault us.

In 2008 they stol 75 of our goats and sheep. We complained to the police but in vain.
3 years ago 90 goats and sheep were stolen. Some were taken to the settler-colony and
others to further locations. In spite of the fact that we know who the thieves are and
even lodged a complaint, the police never intervened and the stolen livestock was never
returned to us.

Because of the repeated assaults and thefts by the settler-colonists we have lost our
grazing area. We have had to close our livestock in corrals and feed it with purchased
feed. We have been compelled to take other types of work, our lives have become impossible
in this area. Lately, volunteers from the peace movements such as Guy and Arik who
accompanied us to our grazing area were beaten up, paying a steep price for their will to
prevent injustice.”

On Tuesday, April 25, 2017, government agents escorted by police demolished Al Arakib
(Negev Bedouin village) yet again.
