The Maraş Initiative is organizing this conference with the aim to commemorate the Maraş massacre, the lessons that can be learnt and considering the future for the Maraş/Turkey regions. According to official figures, during the massacre in Maraş between December 19th and December 26th 1978, hundreds Alevis were killed, over 200 of Alevis's homes were burned and nearly 100 workplaces were destroyed. The perpetrators were not pursued and tried in a court of law. The injustice and the unlawfulness of the Maraş massacre needs to be fully exposed and never forgotten. We hope to create greater public awareness and bring pressure on the European institutions to recognise the Maras massacre formally. The graves of some of our people who were massacred have never been identified. Finding these missing remains will be an important aspect of the work to be done. Furthermore, the identification and recovery of goods and real states belonging to the victims will be integral to the work in progress. In the face of this gross injustice, this conference will mark an important stage in raising the public awareness and to fight for justice.
