The point of the story is this.
You can never plan or know what life will bring. Things which manifest as good can bring bad and vice versa. Life cannot be known fully or predicted.
To respond like the neighbors will manifest a life like a roller coaster and will likely wear one out from emotions running unbridled.
To respond like the widower one is not taken by life but is flowing with it. Life is not extreme one way or the other because nothing is expected of it and nothing is judged either. Life, like a dance, simply is. Emotions are felt and experienced but they do not carve the mind up with itself--which is anxiety.
