For Dean who needs to caretake family and cannot leave them alone while does appt...

And anyone else with logistical problems re just getting to the exchange appt:

If you can't afford to hire help to facilitate getting to appt (hiring a caregiver for the day or hiring transportation)...

And have no family or friend you feel comfortable in asking for a favor...

Consider calling a local church and arranging a volunteer from their community to come help you for that day.

You can frame it like "I have an upcoming legal appt about some family matters, (or work matters or personal matters), and will need to get there to sign some paperwk. When it's time for that appt, is there anyone local who may be available to assist me in (giving me a ride, watching my kids/fam for a few hours, etc.)? The whole thing should prob take just a couple hours. I'm calling a local church since I can't afford to hire help, and wasn't sure where else to turn."

After your exchange, you'll be able to hire assistance.

Regardless if taking a cab or getting a ride from a friend, etc, to the appt, be vague re the content of appt, like in the example above. If anyone probes further, you can say something like "there's some pending litigation involved, so I've been asked not to talk about the details."

Bottom line, ask someone to help you, and be discreet re content of appt.
