"A Better Word for Work" by Rosestillarose - 4.19.17

Hi OWK, here is a word you might like to use instead of "work". It is a Sanskrit word, not an English word that has such a great meaning, I think it makes an excellent addition to any language. It's not my word, obviously but I feel a bit protective of it because it's so dear to me. If you or anyone else wants to use it, could I ask that you please reflect on its meaning and apply it very consciously? This word is a gem. Thank you.

The word is "Seva"! Seva is translated as service offered to one's spiritual master, or service offered without concern for ones personal gain.

The backstory I'd like to add from my own experience is that seva does not entail a life of poverty or any state of lack. The rewards I have received from offering seva have been so much more than I ever could have thought to wish for. Even though I'm not thinking about what it's going to do for me, it turns out all of my needs are met - and then some! Plus a life of service has its own kind of joy. It can really only be experienced.

I love that you put the call out, and I like the word endeavor too.
