Dear IDC Community, here are some statistics for reference. -- Jeff

The World's Billionaires is an annual ranking of the world's wealthiest billionaires compiled and published every March by the American business magazine Forbes. The total net worth of each individual on the list is estimated, in United States dollars, based on their assets and accounting for debt. Royalty and dictators whose wealth comes from their positions are excluded from these lists.

Annual rankings2017 -- For the fourth year in a row, Bill Gates was named the richest man in the world in Forbes Magazine's 2017 list of the world's billionaires. The number of billionaires increased 13% to 2,043 from 1,810 in 2016; this is the biggest change in over 30 years of tracking billionaires globally. This is the first time after 12 years that Carlos Slim was not within the top five. The U.S. continues to have the most billionaires in the world, with a record of 565. China is getting closer with 319, this does not include Hong Kong with 67 and Macau with 1. Germany has the third most with 114 and India with the fourth most with 101; India has reached over 100 billionaires for its first time.

Top eight richest men worth more than HALF of the world's population

The eight richest people on the planet are worth more than the combined wealth of half the world’s population.

An analysis by Oxfam finds the eight multibillionaires - who could share a ride on a golf buggy - have a combined fortune of $426billion (£351billion).

By contrast half the planet’s population, some 3.6billion people, have a combined wealth of $409billion (£337billion). Mark Goldring, Oxfam GB Chief Executive, said: “This year’s snapshot of inequality is clearer, more accurate and more shocking than ever before.

"It is beyond grotesque that a group of men who could easily fit in a single golf buggy own more than the poorest half of humanity. “

The figures are published ahead of the gathering of the business and political elite at the World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland.

The key theme of the gathering, which Theresa May is attending, is responsive and responsible leadership.

Oxfam said its report “An Economy for the 99%” showed the gap between rich and poor “ is far greater than had been feared.”
