THE AWESOME POWER OF FAITH!
The African Impala (a variety of antelope) is capable of soaring 10 feet high into the air, although it is a very small creature, about 3-4 feet tall. Yet, the zoos and parks who confine the impala only build a stone wall only 4 feet high. Why? Because the impala will never jump any obstacle, unless it can see its landing space, the place where its feet land. It is the same with our faith in God. We only gather faith, only till what is conceivable.
There is a fascinating statement made by the man in today’s Gospel. He said to Jesus, “I do have faith. Help the little faith I have!” Whether this man knew the Lord or not, it is hard to say. Yet he did manage to summarize in one sentence, what is probably the greatest obstacle to spiritual growth in the Christian life; that is, faltering faith. This man was saying, in essence, that although he believed in what Jesus was able to do, he was still contending with doubts. He was facing up to his faltering faith. And because he faced up to his lack of faith, he experienced a great blessing. The statement made by this man was a statement of sheer honesty. It’s a statement of serious concern and a statement of sincere desire.
If we are to grow in Christ, we have got to realize that it is quite possible that we do not trust the Lord as much as we would like to think we do. The best thing we could possibly do is stand before the Lord and say from the bottom of our hearts, “I believe Lord, but please help me with my unbelief”.
Prayer: Lord, may I come to You in all things. May I love and serve You when life is good, and may I trust You with an unwavering trust when life is challenging. Increase my faith and help me to manifest that faith every day of my life. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.
