After the customs officer asked the suspect to empty his pockets, he noticed something heavy inside the suspect's coat.
A search of the coat revealed a bag of 53 old coins, dating from 100 BCE to the thirteenth century CE.

"These findings represent 1,400 years of regional history, from the ancient Roman period to the Mamluk period during the 13th century BCE. I am happy to see continued cooperation between the relevant authorities, and am glad we have prevented someone from stealing a piece of everyone's history," said Civil Authority Archaeological Division Vice Chief Benny Har-Even.
In another incident, a Palestinian man from the Gush Etzion region was caught Monda morning digging in the Byzantine site of Umm Al-Amad in the Judean desert. Volunteers from the Shomrim al Hanetzach organization detained the thief and called security forces.

"This is a living testimony of the chaos taking place in Judea & Samaria. Anyone who is out to make some easy money, buys a metal detector, and does whatever he fancies," said Noam. "This area was densely populated in the Byzantine period, but it has yet to be properly explored. If the looting continues, undisturbed, we will never be able to know what went on here."

The organization has recently also launched a 'WhatsApp snitch group' to increase awareness and encourage hikers and citizens to report such robberies or any destruction of archaeological sites all over the country.
