Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Fourteen Islamic State militants were killed on Thursday as fighter jets bombarded their explosives factory in western Mosul, an official security source said.
The source told Shafaaq News that the militants were killed in an airstrike by aircraft from the U.S-led military coalition that targeted a textile factory in al-Somoud district, which was used by the extremist group as a workshop for manufacturing explosives and vehicle booby-trapping.
Iraqi government forcesm, backed by the coalition and paramilitary troops, drove Islamic State militants out of eastern Mosul late January after three months of fighting, and are preparing to cross the Tigris River to the western section where militants are well-entrenched. Though surviving militants escaped to the group’s western strongholds, many have waged several attacks on the eastern areas over the past weeks, killing civilians and security personnel at recaptured areas.
On Tuesday, the head of the Pentagon’s special operations, Gen. Raymond Thomas, said in a conference in Washington D.C that 60.000 Islamic State fighters had been killed in two years during operations by the U.S. coalition. Coalition generals have, however, predicted a more difficult battle in the west of the city given the density of the population and the need to ensure civilians’ safety.
larrykn says(8:24 AM):
(Reuters) If Islamic State is driven from its Iraqi stronghold of Mosul, it will switch tactics to wage an insurgency from mountains and deserts, a top Kurdish intelligence official has told Reuters.
Lahur Talabany, a senior figure in Kurdistan’s counter-terrorism efforts, also expressed concerns that another group similar to the Sunni Muslim Islamic State could emerge to menace Iraq again if political leaders fail to secure reconciliation between sects.
“Mosul will get taken … I think it is the asymmetric warfare that we need to be worried about,” he said.
“Our jobs will become much more difficult. The army will take a rest a little, but it will be the job of security forces that will become more difficult.”
Talabany said there were signs that Islamic State planned to shelter in the Hamrin mountains in the northeast, which could serve as a base for attacks on several provinces.
He cited about five attacks on security forces in Diyala province in the last month.
“It is a very tough terrain. It is very difficult for the Iraqi military to control,” said Talabany.
“It’s a good hideout place and a place they could have access from province to province without getting detected.”
The army, backed by Kurdish forces and Shi’ite militias operating in nearby towns and villages, has driven Islamic State from eastern Mosul after more than three months of battles.
FIGHTING ON AFTER MOSUL
Talabany said there would be more months of street-to-street and house-to-house fighting before the western side was taken, in effect putting an end to the group’s self-proclaimed caliphate.
But he was cautious about the number of militants killed so far. There were en estimated 6,000 in Mosul at the start of the offensive and there is no evidence that anywhere close to that number have been killed, he said.
“We know some of these guys escaped. They are trying to send people out for the next phase, post-Mosul, to go into hiding and sleeper cells,” said Talabany.
“You have to try and find them when they go underground, you have to try and flush out these sleeper cells. There will be unrest in this region for the next few years, definitely.”
Talabany also said Iraq could not afford to underestimate Islamic State’s charismatic leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
“He is very wise. He is not using any kind of communications. He is in the desert area, coming and going between Syria and Iraq, we believe,” he said.
“Their plans are to start up some sort of asymmetric warfare — against the region and globally. Also, we will see lone-wolf attacks pop up here and there in the region.”
A NEW ‘ISLAMIC STATE’?
In 2014, a few hundred Islamic State fighters seized control of Mosul in a few hours, partly because many fellow Sunnis welcomed them, complaining of abuses by the Shi’ite-dominated army and government in Baghdad.
Talabany urged political leaders to avoid making the same mistake again.
“… maybe not Daesh (Islamic State), but another group will pop up under a different name, a different scale. We have to be really careful,” he said. “These next few years will be very difficult for us, politically.”
So far, Iraq’s sectarian violence has mostly pitted the majority Shi’ites against the Arab Sunnis, who dominated under Saddam Hussein.
But the Kurds have had their own tensions with Baghdad, mostly over oil resources and Kurdish dreams of independence, and Talabany suggested Iraq’s internal hostilities could become far more complex unless dialogue was promoted on all sides.
“There is another threat out there that a lot of people are not seeing. We could clash with the (Shi’ite) militia in the future if there is no dialogue with Baghdad,” he said.
In November, Shi’ite militias were transformed into a military corps that reports directly to the prime minister, who is a Shi’ite. This has caused concerns among Sunnis, including the Kurds, that they will be used to strengthen Shi’ite political domination.
larrykn says(8:25 AM):
including the Kurds, that they will be used to strengthen Shi’ite political domination.
“The militias are on our borders … If there is disengagement from Baghdad and no dialogue, I believe they are much more difficult to control. They are not like the regular Iraqi army. I am worried that we could clash.”
larrykn says(8:25 AM):
seems they will always have some problems

(Reuters) Islamic State will put up a tough fight in the western side Mosul that remains under its control despite the losses the group suffered so far in the battle for the Iraqi, a U.S. commander said on Wednesday.
“It is hard and hard every day here,” Colonel Patrick Work, commander of the 2nd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, said in an interview with Reuters TV at a brigade artillery position in northern Mosul.
“There are no guarantees certainly when you are fighting and there is no timetable, it is a determined enemy that we are up against,” he said.
The United States is providing air and ground support to Iraqi and Kurdish forces trying to dislodge the hardline group from Mosul, captured in 2014.
The offensive paused last month after the capture of the districts lying east of the Tigris river that bisects the city.
Preparations are underway to launch the offensive on the western side, which is expected be more difficult because of the density of the population and the narrow streets and alleyways through which armored vehicles cannot pass.
It is from the Grand Mosque in western Mosul that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared a “caliphate” over parts of Iraq and Syria. Should Mosul fall, the group is expected to stage an insurgency.
“We are putting such pressure on Daesh in the west, day in day out as we shake them and choke off their logistics, and put pressure on their command and control and attack their weapons,” Work said, using an Arabic acronym of the group.
“This entire defense in the west is under such pressure that I think there is inevitable momentum.”
Work’s brigade took over command in Mosul six weeks ago from the 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division.
Artillery support will be key in the upcoming battle as it can strike in all weather, he said, adding that U.S. artillery positions were repositioned after the battle for eastern Mosul.
The U.S. military has about 5,260 troops in Iraq, 1,700 of them paratroopers from Work’s brigade.

ISTANBUL — By the time all of Mosul will be liberated from Islamic State (IS) the city will be uninhabitable, according to Hoshyar Zebari, an Iraqi Kurdish politician.
Although eastern Mosul has officially been liberated, the residents returning to their homes are once again leaving due to damaged infrastructure, lack of water, electricity, and medical care. According to the UN, of those that returned to east Mosul between February 8 and 9, more than half decided to turn back to displacement camps.
Moreover, security concern are still high for those that returned, as IS suicide bombers are still carrying out attacks in the eastern, supposedly freed areas. The latest such attacks occurred this week, killing 12 and leaving 33 injured.
"There are [IS] 'sleeper cells' with maybe 16 to 24 men in each district which come out of hiding and kill people who are cooperating with the government," Zebari told The Independent in an interview.
"They target restaurants which have reopened and serve soldiers," he added.
The high level of corruption in security checkpoints is another reason such attacks can be carried out. The Independent interviewed some drivers who confirmed that travel documents can be bought for about $20 and security officers can be bribed just as easily. Due to this, civilian areas in eastern Mosul are vulnerable to attacks.
Thus, the situation in eastern Mosul is far from safe. However, the situation in the western part of the city may prove even worse, according to Zebari.
Reportedly, the leader of the IS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is in western Mosul. It is supposed that the fighters around him are of a higher caliber and specialization. Considering that western Mosul is their last stronghold in Iraq, and that the leader of the IS is there, it is likely that the fighting will prove more ferocious and lengthier than it was in eastern Mosul.
"I think west Mosul will be destroyed," Zebari said.
All of Mosul was expected to be liberated by the end of the previous year, by the elite Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Services, led by 10,000 Golden Division members. However, resistance of 3,000 IS militants caused the death of about half of Golden Division members, according to US reports. On the other hand, only about 2,000 IS militants were killed. The Iraqi government has been paying 1 million dollars to South Korea every month as a financial fine for not being able to receive the aircraft T-50IQ, according to a contract signed by former Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

According to the deal, the process of delivery of the aircraft would've begun in April of 2016 after the completion of the Swairah airport by the Iraqi government.
