larrykn says(8:18 AM):

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) said Wednesday they launched an offensive to clear the road linking the strategic towns of Tal Afar and Sinjar in western Mosul from Islamic State militants.

The force’s media service said the “complementary” operation sat on from the region of Ein Hussan to clear the road between the two towns located near the borders with Syria.

Since its formation in 2014 Al-Hashd al-Shaabi has been actively involved in the Iraqi government’s fight against Islamic State militants. PMUs have been active around Islamic State’s supply lines coming from Syria, and had achieved a remarkable victory in November when they recaptured the Tal Afar military airport. The conglomerate of dozens of Shia volunteer militias won state recognition as a national armed force in November.

Iraqi government forces, backed by PMUs and a U.S.-led international military coalition, have been fighting Islamic State since mid October to retake the city of Mosul, the group’s largest bastion in Iraq which fell in its grip in 2014.

Operations have so far managed to recapture the whole eastern section of the city, and preparations are underway to invade the west, where military commanders predict a tougher battle.

PMUs’ involvement in Tal Afar has been a controversial issue as Sunni regional players such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia had voiced fears that their participation in battles for the mostly-Sunni town could have sectarian consequences. The Iraqi government has reiterated its confidence in al-Hashd’s commitment.

Sinjar is, meanwhile, inhabited by a multi-sect population.

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) A senior Islamic State bomb expert died Tuesday along with a companion while planting an explosive device in Salahuddin province.

The militant, nicknamed Abu Abdullah, died with a comrade when a bomb they were trying to plant at a road in the town of Shirqat went off, a security source told Alsumaria News.

He was a second-tier leader and a bomb expert at one of the most outstanding booby-trapping cells in the extremist group who was involved in recent bombings over the past months, according to the source, who asked not to be named.

Iraqi government forces, backed by a U.S.-led military coalition and popular troops, have been battling Islamic State out of Iraqi cities it took over in 2014, most notably Mosul, its biggest stronghold, the half of which was recaptured by security forces on January 24th.

In december 2016, joint government forces said they recaptured several villages in the eastern side of Shirqat. IS still maintains a few pockets in the province, and has carried out a number of bloody attacks against security forces in the recent weeks.

Earlier on Tuesday, security and popular mobilization forces reportedly killed 42 Islamic State extremists after they foiled attacks by the group at Tal Kusaiba and Mutaibija regions.

ERBIL — Kuwaiti government introduced a US-like travel ban on passport holders of five Muslim-majority countries, according Gulf state.

The Kuwaiti new blanket ban includes Syrians, Iraqis, Iranians, Pakistanis and Afghans.

The ban is in place and citizens from those countries are not able to obtain visit, tourism or trade Kuwaiti visas.

The Kuwaiti state ascribes the travel restrictions to the instability and the existence of terrorist groups in those countries and that the ban would be lifted once the security situation improves.

US President Donald Trump has recently signed an executive order that includes a 90-day entry ban on citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries including Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
