I am actually dropping in for another drive by. As I was listening to yesterday’s call (at about the 33:00 mark) we heard that there might be a different treatment between perishable and durable goods. While ALL opinions are just that, I keep feeling that some of the opinions introduce confusion where it need not exist. The IQD will change value both inside and outside the country at the same moment. Obviously, a dinar will be worth exactly a dinar ….. EVERYWHERE in the world (discounting the potential for bulk transfers and criminal activity). However, the WORTH of the dinar will change in tandem with what happens outside the country.

No vendor will “take it in the shorts” because of the RV. The “value” of the head of lettuce or brake rotor is COMPLETELY unaffected by a change in the value of the dinar. The only thing that changes is the value, and therefore the number, of the dinar used to transact the goods transfer.

I’ll try to use a different example:

For this discussion I would like to call the current IQD:USD rate as 1000:1 and an ounce of gold is $1200.00. We could use the real numbers, but this is close and far easier.

Let’s assume that I am a well-to-do Iraqi. I want to diversify and buy 1oz of gold, pre-RV. I will pay 1,200,000IQD for my 1 oz. coin. I immediately put my coin in my safe to protect it. In a few days, the RV occurs, it is managed at 1:1. How much is that gold coin worth in IQD? Gold is one of the most “durable” goods that I can imagine, but I would hope that no one would argue that the $1,200.00 coin will not be able to be transacted for 1,200,000IQD post RV. The coin will sell for 1,200IQD.

If that makes any sense at all, then I will argue that brake rotors (or lettuce, for that matter) are no different as commodities. I will concede that there is a well defined exchange market for gold and one does not exist for rotors – but that distinction does not impact the logic.

Again, my dissent is meant to be respectful. I respect the efforts of all the contributor

something to consider in discussion. I will use a comparable example with gas stations. There is constant gas price fluctuations at the gas pumps. Say you fill your dealerships holding tanks at a certain price point. the next day gas prices goes up or down the next morning. There is certain gas stations that will adjust immediately on there selling price, while others will try to hold out on their adjustment as long as they can, depending on their specific position of whether they stand to profit or not. There is incredible pressure to adjust as soon as they can to be competitive with the other gas stations. The adjustment made should work out in the end with minimal lose by averaging out.

I think gas retailers are always ahead of the game, can't tell me they fill their tanks , half gets used up and the price of oil increases, the price at the pump increase , inventory still has the same cost. I realize it can be the opposite as well.

I agree with that, but I am refering to the "value" of the goods held. There is no loss in value of that -- but, again, the only people who make money in the RV as we hope for it to be are those who actually hold the currency -- not stuff purchased with the currency
