CHOOSE LIFE!
Today we see the melancholic end of an upright and fearless prophet John in the hands of a reckless ruler filled with lust, vain glory and false images of status and prestige! Herod made three big mistakes, which a responsible ruler should not have committed. First, he set a bad example, by marrying his brother’s wife. Second, he made a thoughtless promise to a dancer girl. Third, for fear of what people would say and to save his false prestige, he ordered the murder of a just and innocent man.
No person has the right to play with life of another, whether in prison or in the streets or in the Womb. And those in authority, who have the duty to protect life, must think twice and make doubly sure that innocent lives are not endangered.
Reflect, today, upon any similar tendencies you have in your life. Do you get angry and project that anger on others who do not deserve it? Reflect upon any of these tendencies you see and then look deeper at the source of them. If you see that the root cause of these unhealthy tendencies is some unrepented sin in your own life, then repent of it honestly and completely so that our Lord can free you of the effects of sin.
Once the honeybee, whose conduct used to be as sweet as the honey it makes, went to God and asked for a boon. “When I sting someone, there should be instant death.” God was shocked. The boon was changed into a curse. “Granted. But the one who dies will be the one who stings, not the one who is stung.” God wants promotion of life, not destruction.
Prayer: Lord, I do repent of all sin. I pray that I may see my sin honestly and sincerely. And as I see my sin, help me to confess it to You so that I may be free not only of the burden of my sin, but also of the effects of that burden. Lord, May I always protect life in all forms. May I strive to be a messenger of life? Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.
