Dear friends, Police violence is a human rights crisis in the United States. The use of deadly force happens everywhere - in our schools, by a car pulled over on a highway, in jail cells, outside a convenience store and in homes. As human rights defenders, we cannot be silent about the use of deadly force by law enforcement. That’s why we need to tell the Department of Justice to require accurate data on deaths in police custody. Take action now to make sure deaths in police custody are documented. Hundreds of individuals are killed by law enforcement annually. But because the Department of Justice fails to collect accurate, comprehensive national data on police use of force, including the numbers of people killed or injured through police shootings or other types of force, it is impossible to truly understand the enormity of the issue across the country. The first step in the journey is to demand that the Department of Justice follow through on its promise to track deaths at the hands of law enforcement. Join us and take action to ensure that the Department of Justice requires accurate data on deaths in police custody. Together we can combat the unlawful use of deadly force in the United States. You have helped us reach over 73,000 signatures to President Obama, provided on the ground support to protestors, and shown up to rallies in North Carolina, Missouri, Maryland, Minnesota and other states. Now we’re joining with other organizations to send a loud and clear message to the Department of Justice: law enforcement agencies must report all deaths of people in police custody.
