Iraqi Air Force targeted ISIL militants West of the Northern city of Mosul, killing at least 40 terrorists during an aerial operation, army said on Thursday.
The Iraqi Army's information center said in a statement that the ISIL militants were preparing to carry out an attack on Popular Mobilization Forces, locally known as Hashd al-Shaabi, in Ein al-Hissan village South of Tal Afar that came under the aerial attack in al-Qirawan region, West of Mosul.
Three ISIL vehicles were destroyed in the air raids and all militants inside the vehicles were annihilated, the statement added.
The new casualties on the ISIL militants near the terror group's last urban bastion in Northern Iraq comes a day after the Iraqi defense ministry announced that ISIL has lost over 50 percent of its militants in the city of Mosul in Nineveh province in the last 100 days.
"The intelligence obtained by us indicates that there have been over 6,000 ISIL terrorists in Mosul and around 3,400 of them have been killed in battles with Iraq's joint military forces in the major city of Nineveh province," Iraqi Defense Ministry Spokesman Colonel Laith al-Naimi said on Wednesday.

A US-led air coalition on Thursday carried out a series of airstrikes targeting the city of Mosul’s Daesh-held international airport, according to an Iraqi military source.
"Coalition warplanes struck the airport’s control towers, which Daesh snipers had used to fire on Iraqi military personnel," Army Colonel Ezzedine al-Andalusi told Anadolu Agency.
"Thursday’s airstrikes succeeded in neutralizing all militants deployed near the targets," he said, without providing an exact number.

he Iraqi War Media Cell on Wednesday confirmed the capture of two ISIS commanders in the east of Mosul, northern Iraq.
The Iraqi security forces also seized a sizable amount of explosive materials from locations used by retreating ISIS militants as hideouts.
The name and exact ranks of captured ISIS commanders remains unknown, but it is revealed that the capture was during a searching operation to clear the liberated areas from ISIS presence.
Eastern Mosul has been witnessing fierce military confrontations between Iraqi army and ISIS militants since October 17 last year when the Mosul assault was kicked off.
After nearly 100 days, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi last Tuesday declared victory in recapturing all neighborhoods on the eastern bank of Tigris River.
