Third Week of Advent
Is 54: 1-10;
Ps 30: 2-13;
Lk 7: 24-30
YOU HAVE AN INVITATION TO THE KINGDOM OF GOD!
Who is the greatest in the kingdom of God? Jesus praised John the Baptist as the greatest person ever born. But in the same breath Jesus said that the least in the kingdom of God is even greater than John! This seems like a contradiction unless we understand what Jesus was about to accomplish for our sake. John is the last and greatest of the prophets of the old covenant. He fulfilled the essential task of all the prophets – ‘to point to Christ, God's Anointed Son and Messiah’. John pointed towards Jesus at the River Jordan ‘Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world’ (Jn 1:29). John saw from a distance what Jesus would accomplish through his death on the cross – our redemption from bondage to sin and death and our adoption as sons and daughters of God and citizens of the kingdom of heaven.
Like John the Baptist, we too are called to give testimony to the light and truth of Jesus Christ. We are called to be the followers of Jesus. We are called to accept the teaching and salvation offered by Jesus and thus receive the invitation to enter the kingdom of heaven. We might face the temptation to be self-righteous like the religious leaders during Jesus’ time and miss the invitation of Jesus. Don’t reject that invitation; rather, embrace it wholeheartedly. In that embrace you may just find that God blesses you in abundance in ways you never imagined.
Prayer: Lord, help me to enter in to Your daily invitations in my life. May I always discern Your holy will and live it without reserve. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.
