- The materials of the scientific discovery of the inhibitory effects of synthetic surfactants, detergents(which can pollute aquatic environment) of three classes on the filtering activity of bivalves are given. The finding of those effects was recognized as a scientific discovery that was certified by the Diploma of Scientific Discover (No. 274). The priority of the discovery was 9.08.2000. The author of the discovery is Dr. S.A. Ostroumov, Lomonosov Moscow State University. In the book, a collection of materials on how surfactants affect filtering activity of bivalves is presented. The materials include an abstract of a series of publications of S.A. Ostroumov on that matter, a list of bibliography, a collection of comments and opinions of experts in ecology and ecotoxicology, a list of websites that contain information on relevant publications, and a list of educational materials that were updated using those publications and results. The discovery demonstrates a new type of ecological and environmental hazards from the chemical pollution of the biosphere, sets some new priorities in the assessment of manmade impact on the biosphere and the prevention of the most important types of chemical pollution of aquatic environment. A preface to the book is written by Academician Prof. G.V. Dobrovolsky who is one of the top-rank members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, an expert in the science of the biosphere, and Prof. E.A. A new fundamental theory for the biomechanisms for water self-purification is presented in the S.A.Ostroumov’s book ‘Aquatic Organisms in Water Self-Purification and Biogenic Migration of Elements’ (2008, 200 p.). The book presents many facts (organized into a consistent well-stuctured system) on hydrobionts (aquatic organisms) which are actively involved in various processes leading to water purification. The book demonstrates that almost all main groups of organisms are involved, which is discussed and analyzed in the book and in a series of papers by the same author. The author presents a new consistent theory of biological water self-purification in aquatic ecosystems. In this theory, the results of the author's experiments on the effects of various pollutants on aquatic organisms were used. It is the first book on the subject of biochemical ecology in the world scientific literature including scientific publications in the U.S.A., Russia, U.K., Germany, France, Japan, Australia, and other countries. This book created a new science of biochemical ecology. The book covers two major areas of biochemical ecology: (1) natural chemicals that are produced by organisms and involved in interactions among organisms; (2) biochemical transformation of
xenobiotics and chemical pollutants. The book formulated new useful and fundamental concepts and proposed new terminology, e.g. ecological chemomediators and ecological chemoregulators. It is the first book that formulated a list of biospheric and ecological functions of natural chemicals produced by organisms. A new concept of the biosphere as an ecological-biochemical continuum was proposed. The book was translated into Polish and Bulgarian. A new, second edition of this book
was published in Russian under the title 'Introduction to Problems of Biochemical Ecology' (Moscow, Nauka Press, 1990).
