THE MYSTERY OF THE ‘WORD’

The gospel today according to St. John reveals to us a mystery, the mystery of the ‘Word’, the ‘Word’ who takes on flesh and is eternal, who from “the beginning with God.”  This ‘Word’ is Jesus. The ‘Word’ is a translation of the Greek word “Logos”, which means “plan,” “reason,” “logic,” and “the spoken word.” We are revealed that God “spoke” His perfect plan of salvation and this wisdom spoken is a Person, the Divine Son of God. From his personal experience of having lived with Christ, John was deeply convinced that Jesus is the Word, Who is from the beginning with God, Who became flesh and dwelt among us. This offers us a synthesis of the entire Christian faith. Christianity is not a religion of the book but the religion of the word of God, not of a written and mute word, but of the incarnate and living Word.

Therefore, in the Eucharistic celebration in a special way, when the good news is proclaimed, it is Christ Himself Who proclaims it through His ministers, seeking the same response of loving faith He sought of those to whom He preached in Palestine. And the Church is, in its innermost essence, the community of those who hear the word of God and heed it. The question is, as members of this listening community of faith, how do we respond? Are we always ready to open ourselves to God’s word and His will for us? Or do we find ourselves uninterested, unaffected by the transforming power of the word, unmoved by its urgings, indifferent to the graces it brings?

Prayer: Lord, Jesus, Eternal Word of the Father, I thank You for coming among us and for making Your eternal dwelling present to us. Thank You for the great mystery of Christmas. Help me to always celebrate this season with great joy and gratitude, and also with a sense of mystery. May this mystery draw me closer each and every day so that I may fall more deeply in love with You, my eternal Word and God. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen
