Your gift matched: Donate now Dear friends, Basel is a Syrian refugee. When Amnesty crisis investigators met him, he and his family had been trapped in a refugee camp in Greece since February. He told us, “It’s very bad life. The water is very dirty and not enough. There are no toilets in the tents, no medicines; we are human beings, not animals.” In March of this year, the Greek border was shut, effectively blocking refugee routes to safety. Almost 60,000 people — like Basel — are stranded in Greece, the majority in appalling conditions. Basel, who is 45, was hoping to make it to Sweden where one of his daughters lives. But the border shut before he could get out, trapping his family in a desperate limbo. Please support Amnesty’s efforts to: - Ensure that President Obama puts key protections in place for refugees before he leaves office.
- Speak out to ensure that President-elect Trump does not put into practice any of the anti-refugee rhetoric and policy proposals he promoted during his campaign.
- Collect and publicize refugee stories to stop fear mongering and to maintain public support for a compassionate and human rights-centered response to the crisis.
- Investigate violations of refugees’ human rights, and document the situation facing refugees in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and around the world so that we can build global support for refugees.
Amnesty teams have been working on this crisis since it first erupted. Sincerely, Margaret Huang Executive Director |
