Dear friends,
One early December morning, the penguin keeper at Canada's Calgary Zoo came into work and uncovered a tragedy. As she entered the building where the birds are housed, she found a Humboldt penguin's body lying lifeless in its holding tank. A few moments later, she realized there were six other penguins lying dead in the pool.
Autopsies concluded that the animals had drowned, but it is extremely rare for penguins to drown. Experts say such a terrible death must have been triggered by a stressful event that caused the birds to panic.
This is not the first mysterious animal death to occur at Calgary Zoo. In 2013, a bacterial infection killed two other penguins. And in February, an otter became twisted up in a pair of pants that were supposed to be a toy, and drowned.
Animal safety must be the zoo's main priority, and it's clear that the best way to protect the rest of the Humboldt penguins is to shut down the penguin exhibit. One-third of the Humboldt penguins at the Calgary Zoo died as a result of this terrible incident. The zoo must send these animals to a sanctuary where they will not be exposed to sudden stressful events that could cause even more fatalities.
The more people speak out, the more Calgary Zoo officials will realize they are in the global spotlight and must take action now. Will you sign the petition?
Thank you for all that you do,
