Ostroumov S.A. Role of biota in ecological mechanisms of water self-purification. 2016. Moscow. MAX Press. – 124 p. (Series: Ecological Studies, Hazards, Solutions, Issue 22). The book summarizes the previous work and publications of the author, his articles on the role of living organisms (the biota) in purification and improvement of water quality in natural ecosystems (water bodies and streams; Chapters 1-3). The book organized in a system many of the functions of living organisms that contribute to water self-purification in marine and freshwater ecosystems (Chapter 4). The connection of water self-purification studies with research on other issues of aquatic biology and ecology is shown (Chapter 5). The new author's results and development of ideas of V.I. Vernadsky on the role of living matter in the biosphere. The conclusions made in the book are relevant to sustainable use of water and biological resources, biodiversity conservation, maintenance of ecosystem services which are essential for environmental safety of water supply sources and sustainable development.
