Your gift matched: Donate now Dear friends, Imagine you are somebody else for a minute. You are Edna. It is the middle of the night. You are sleeping soundly with your twin sons beside you. Suddenly your dreams are interrupted by your son, Harry, screaming. You look for his small warm body. But you can’t find him. He is being picked up by a stranger and dragged out of the room. Why was he killed? Because he was born with albinism, a rare genetic condition that causes a lack of melanin in the skin — the pigment that gives the skin its color. Over the past two years, hundreds of attacks have been committed in Malawi against young children, men and women with albinism. Today, they are being targeted by criminal gangs. We can stop them, but we need your help. Help Amnesty pressure the government of Malawi to immediately act to protect people with albinism. Help us support the Malawian human rights defenders leading this fight. Donate to support our efforts. An increase in poverty, hunger and hardship in Malawi has contributed to a climate of desperation. Against this backdrop, the belief that that the body parts of people with albinism have magical powers has spread. Some say their bones are filled with gold; others that their limbs and organs can be used in rituals that bring riches and success in business. I refuse to stand by while children are kidnapped, killed and dismembered because of superstition and misinformation. Amnesty researchers and campaigners are with Malawians to stop these criminal gangs and protect people with albinism. When we work together, we know we can make meaningful change. With your help we can: - Work with Malawians and the Malawi government to change the law to ensure criminal gangs responsible for these attacks are brought to justice.
- Work with local organizations and communities to spread the truth about albinism and challenge the myths
- Help provide protection and build hope for those with albinism in Malawi
The fear and devastation Edna feels today is something no mother should have to live with. Sincerely, Adotei Akwei Managing Director, Government Relations P.S. Amnesty takes no funding from governments for our research and campaign work. We rely on donors like you. Donate today and your gift will be matched. |
