Residents are stuffing towels against the bottom of doors to cover any cracks. Whole families are suffering from severe headache, dizziness and nausea. And it's all thanks to the Shongweni hazardous waste site near Durban, South Africa. Sign the petition to shut down the Shongweni landfill and protect local residents! Care2 member Rum Dotan-Love moved to the area two years ago with his wife and daughters. At the time, the area seemed amazing. Nearby, the Shongweni Nature Reserve houses a top-rated bird sanctuary and hikers flock to the Shongweni Dam. But it's not all sunshine and roses. Because Rum quickly learned that the community was also being poisoned by toxic gases released at the local hazardous waste site. Now, both of Rum's children and his wife are suffering from intense respiratory issues and allergies that never existed before. His neighbors live with their windows and doors closed even in the height of summer to block out the terrible smell.
