Dear friends,
Fiona MacGregor is a freelance journalist based in Myanmar. She used to work at the English-language newspaper Myanmar Times as a special investigations editor – until she was fired for exposing widespread rapes committed by state security forces.
Ms. MacGregor has covered ethnic tensions in Rakhine State for years, particularly the persecution of Rohingya people, a minority group. In the past few months, violence against the Rohingya has skyrocketed and much of the region is currently on military lockdown. Rakhine residents have witnessed extrajudicial killings, torture, large-scale evictions, and properties being burnt and looted. And now soldiers are raping women and teenage girls.
On October 27, MacGregor published an article detailing how approximately thirty women had been raped by security forces in a single village on October 19. Afterwards, leadership at the Myanmar Times fired her and informed her she had "breached company policy by damaging...the paper's reputation." Now, some government officials are even urging the police to investigate MacGregor.
We cannot let an honorable journalist be punished for reporting the truth and standing up for women who have been assaulted. Please sign this petition to support Fiona McGregor and defend her commitment to the truth.
If enough people sign, it will show the Myanmar Times and the Myanmar government how much the public values the truth.
Thank you for all that you do,
 Miranda B.
