RESPONSIBLE CARETAKERS
The Advent of social media has brought about many advantages, but one of the disadvantages is F.O.M.O (Fear of Missing out). Nowadays people are constantly seen on phones; checking Facebook notifications or continuously chatting even when they share a family meal or attending a birthday party. We use a lot of time tweeting, posting photos on Instagram, and texting messages. Sometimes we get fearful of the choices other people make. Did someone buy the new iphone or the ipad? Did my friend dine at the newly exotic restaurant? Did my brother get the latest designer shirt? We feel anxious and uneasy after reading our friends’ Facebook updates and we ask did we miss out on the latest?
The Scriptures today invite us to be responsible stewards towards our earthly possessions. No doubt material possessions are God’s blessings if acquired legally and morally. First of all, as Christians we are to use our possessions for the good and benefit of others. Secondly, when one faithfully handles the earthly possessions, God qualifies him or her for heavenly wealth. Thirdly, earthly possessions have earthly value.
Paul acknowledges that Philippians were the only church that responded generously with possessions while he was in prison facing persecution. They were constant and consistent in giving. Moreover, it was a sacrificial offering pleasing to the Lord. How did they respond to the need of Paul in prison? They immediately took up a love collection and dispatched it with Epaphrotitus to cater to Paul’s needs. To say the least, they supported the Church and used the wealth for the benefit of others.
Prayer: Lord, help me to be a responsible steward of my material and spiritual wealth. Amen.
