Dear friends,
My name is Albert Woodfox and I spent over 40 years, most of it in solitary confinement, in Angola State Penitentiary in Louisiana, once one of the bloodiest prisons in the United States. I was imprisoned for a murder I did not commit due to my activism for reform against the brutal prison conditions and due to my membership in the Black Panther Party.
On Feb. 19, 2016, my 69th birthday, I was released. Had it not been for Amnesty International supporters like you writing letters on my behalf, I might still be unjustly imprisoned.
I made a promise that if I would ever go free, I would be a voice for others enduring this nightmare of being wrongly incarcerated.

While I sat alone in a cell only six by nine feet, my conviction was overturned three different times. And each time, to prevent me from going free, the state would appeal and was successful.
