THE GATE TO THE KINGDOM OF GOD!
God has prepared for us an eternal life and this life is for all. Jesus says in today’s Gospel, “people will come from east and west, from north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God” (Lk 13:29). But one thing is certain that there is no favoritism in the Kingdom of God. Peter tells in the Acts of the Apostles, “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him” (Acts 10:34-35). So when that man asked Jesus, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” Jesus doesn’t answer him directly. He doesn’t say few or more, these or those, he only says, “strive to enter through the narrow gate” (Lk 13:23-24). Hence, according to him those who struggle to enter will get into it. And because the door to eternal life is narrow, some surprises can be foreseen. He says, “Indeed, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last” (Lk 13:30). The chosen ones may be the last of people. People from north and south, east and west may precede them. Therefore, those who think that they are the privileged ones to enter the Kingdom because they have some knowledge of Jesus, because they have celebrated the Sunday Eucharist, because they have heard some Sunday sermons may be disappointed. That is Christ’s warning.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of salvation. Shower on me Your graces so that I may be that ‘one’ among others to be saved by You. Amen.
