Dear friends, United States International University-Africa (USIU-A) is a well-respected educational institution in Kenya. It educates thousands of students every year and offers 24 degree programs from the undergraduate to doctoral level. Its land has also just been grabbed out from under it. 17 years ago, USIU-A purchased a 30-acre plot from an insurance agency, and built its campus on this land. But now, a private developer is claiming "true" ownership over this same land. According to the developer, he bought the land in June 2016 from the former President of Kenya. This type of land-grabbing is not unique in Kenya. Corrupt transactions and disputes over land have become an all-too-common reality. They also pose a huge threat for the future of education, prosperity, investment, and even human rights. And grabbing land out from under a university could set a terrifying precedent. The USIU-A community is not giving up. In fact, they're taking a stand for all Kenyans who are tired of losing their property to corrupt dealings.Students have started a Care2 petition demanding that the government of Kenya put an end to all land-grabbing. If the government sees that people from all over the world are supporting these students' cause, it will have to pay attention. Will you sign their petition? Thank you for all that you do, | | Miranda B. The Care2 Petitions Team |
