October 15 – World Rural Women's Day

They're sometimes called “the world's invisible workers.”

And today's holiday has been created to shine the light of attention on women in rural areas.




According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the majority of poor people in the world are women, and these women are “overwhelmingly responsible for feeding hungry men and children, as well as themselves.” 

Does that mean that they're responsible for cooking?



Not just that. They largely grow, gather, and catch the food that the family eats. They gather the wood and lug the water that are necessary for cooking and otherwise preparing the food. They have the skills and the knowledge to feed their families, and they put in the hard work to do so.

But still, women are generally the last to receive education, support, training, resources, or financial loans.

Here's the take-away: investing in rural women equals investing in food security.

These days, some organizations are concentrating on micro-training
and micro-loans to women, especially to rural women.
