VIOLATIONS OF THE SABBATH DAY!
The Sabbath existed even before the law was given at Mount Sinai (Ex 19). The Jews were taught to “remember the Sabbath” and thus keep it holy. The Sabbath was intended as a day of rest and worship, a time to remember that God ceased his work of creation on the seventh day. The Pharisees considered the disciples’ action in the Gospel a violation of the Sabbath. When they condemned Jesus for doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath, he turned the tables on them. Jesus used David as an example. When fleeing from Saul, he ate bread consecrated for use in the Holy Place of the tabernacle (1 Sam 21: 1-6). Jesus then declared that the Sabbath is not Lord, but the Son of Man is. He alone has the authority to override any rule or law concerning the Sabbath.
Prayer: Lord, may I honor You in my work and in my rest and treat my neighbor with respect and kindness. Keep me free from a critical and intolerant spirit that I may seek the good of my neighbor in all situations. Amen.
