THE FAMILY OF GOD!
The immediate family is generally looked upon as the closest bond on earth. However, Christ teaches that there is a closer tie than the family, the tie that binds him and his followers together. This is the lesson we get in today’s Gospel passage. Jesus was standing before the crowd preaching and all of a sudden he was interrupted, being told that his mother and brothers were outside wanting to see him. His reply to them sounded as if he disowns his mother. He is not disowning his family nor relegating the family to a position of less importance, nor teaching that the human family matters little to God. He is proclaiming the existence of a unique family - a spiritual family. The unique family and kinship is based upon the word of God -hearing it and doing it. The person who is closest to God is the person who obeys God, who takes his word seriously.
Prayer: Lord, make us Your true brothers and sisters united in a big spiritual family. Amen.
