Support crisis investigators: Your gift matched‏

September Membership Drive - Your Gift Matched Through 9/30

Dear friends,

Do you ever wonder what Amnesty crisis investigators do and how their work actually helps people suffering oppression?

Here’s a story that Tirana Hassan, one of our investigators who is working on the Syrian refugee crisis, told me. I think it shines a light on how important the work you fund is. She said,

“We drove up through this typical Hungarian village and all I saw was this never-ending razor wire fence. I took a photograph and tweeted, ‘Fortress Europe.’”

“We finally hit the official Hungarian-Serbian border crossing and as I opened the car door I was hit by the familiar smell of tear gas. The refugees had become increasingly frustrated and tried to breach the border crossing. The Hungarian authorities responded with more tear gas and water cannons.”

“I felt a tap on my shoulder and a man explained to me that security forces, while pushing back the refugees, had taken some of the women and children. Immediately we began to investigate what had happened. One man had lost his wife and a young child. Another man lost two of his children. After an hour of speaking to eye witnesses, we were sure they had taken these children.”

“We drafted an immediate press statement. While my colleagues were spreading the word to the world’s press, we spotted a Serbian official responsible for refugee affairs standing at the border crossing. We gave him the list of names. After some negotiation, he said he would go to the Hungarian authorities and call for the immediate release of those families.”

“They were reunited.”

“When you see injustice, we often assume that somebody is going to do something about it. But what if they don’t? We all have a responsibility to stand up and fight against injustice. We all have a role to play in this.”
