I AM NOT WORTHY!

1Cor 11: 17-26, 33;
Ps 39: 7-10, 17;
Lk 7: 1-10.

I AM NOT WORTHY!

A centurion’s servant is near death. He sends Jewish elders to ask Jesus’ help. The elders say: “He is worthy to have you do this for him.” Jesus, not commenting on whether or not the centurion is worthy, accompanies the elders. When the centurion learns that Jesus is on His way, he sends another delegation, this one of his friends. He has them tell Jesus, “Don’t trouble yourself! I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.” He denies what the elders said! “Therefore I did not presume to come to you.” “I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you” “I am not worthy!”

What about us? How much forgiveness have you received? Are you like Simon Peter, not recognizing the depth of your sin? Faith sees one’s own unworthiness. Don’t be fooled by those who say about you, “He’s a good guy. She’s a good woman. She deserves so much.” If we get what I deserve (for our sins), we will end up in hell.

In reply to the question “How are you?” C.J. Mahaney is fond of saying, “Better than I deserve.” We are all unworthy of Jesus. True faith sees its own unworthiness. But in spite of this, Jesus enters our homes, he knocks at the door of our hearts. Not because we deserve, but because he loves us…he gives us more than we deserve!

Prayer: Come into my heart, O Lord and make it a worthy dwelling place. Amen.
