THE SPIRITUAL BATTLE!
In today’s scripture readings, St Paul speaks of the Spirit of God and the spirit of the world, the constant battle within our soul, as we are drawn in both ways. The Gospel depicts Jesus as an exorcist, calling an “unclean demon” to come out of a man. The people in Capernaum may have known that the man in the story had an unclean spirit, but they did not know what, or who, that spirit was. They could not name it or really recognize it. But Jesus could. His intimacy with the Father gave him a kind of perception that others lacked. St Ignatius of Loyola uses the term ‘discernment of spirits’ for a systematic and faith-based method of knowing and understanding, what is going on in our hearts and what is God’s will for us. Let us the discern the confusion in us and listen to the voice of God.
Prayer: Father God, I implore You for the ‘gift of discernment’ so that I can grow up and listen sharply and clearly to the voice of Your Spirit. Amen.
