August 18, the Champaign County Board met to vote on a sales tax referendum to go on the
ballot in the Fall. The purpose of the proposed sales tax increase is primarily to fund a
jail expansion package at the expense of neglecting sorely needed social services and
programs. Knowing that Champaign County’s rich would oppose an increase in property taxes,
the Board chose to instead fund jail expansion through a sales tax increase, which largely
affects the poor. In other words, Champaign’s mostly Black working and sub-working class
people who are disproportionately targeted by the police will be made to fund their own
incarceration. Kristina Khan, who is a BRRN member and an organizer in the local group
Build Programs Not Jails attended the Board meeting to speak during the Community Comment
portion. Rather than address the Board, as is the custom during Community Comment, Khan
turned her back to the County Board and instead addressed the people. The following is a
video and transcript of her speech.

I’m gonna use my allotted 5 minutes of fake democratic process to talk to you all, not to
them. Although I’ve been struggling with what exactly it is I want to say tonight I do
know that I don’t want to waste any more of my time facing that direction [toward the
County Board]. I want to put my time and energy your direction [toward the people].
As we all know the community has been battling jail construction for about 5 years and
I’ve been working within this campaign for only two of those years while also being self
employed and a mother to three young children. While I have see the deception and
manipulation of the board chair and the sheriff’s office I have also seen what makes C-U a
wonderful place to live and that is due wholly to you – the people who fight daily for
this to be a compassionate, healthy, and justice-centered community.
I have seen you as many different organizations and individuals who have stepped up and
who I know will continue to step up and speak out on how jail expansion here – in the
midwest of a country in a crisis of racialized mass incarceration – is financially
ridiculous, physically and emotionally cruel, and a threat to public safety. And make no
mistake, the way this is all set up, this proposal is a threat to the needs of the nursing
home as well. We know that proven alternatives exist and that it’s a matter of will to
begin implementing them. We know that we have to look at the entire picture of criminal
justice in order to address it. We know that we can’t build our way out of social problems.
One of the leading scholars on mass incarceration and a survivor of abuse in the criminal
justice system herself, Angela Davis says,
“The history of the very institution of the prison is a history of reform… Reform doesn’t
come after the advent of the prison; it accompanies the birth of the prison. So prison
reform has only ever created better prisons. In the process of creating better prisons,
more people are brought under the surveillance of the correctional and law enforcement
networks… We internalize the notion of a place to put bad people… Why is that person bad?
The prison forecloses discussion about that. What is the nature of that badness? What did
the person do? Why did the person do that? If we’re thinking about someone who has
committed acts of violence, why is that kind of violence possible?… The very existence of
the prison forecloses the kinds of discussions that we need in order to imagine the
possibility of eradicating these behaviors.
Just send them to prison. Just keep on sending them to prison. Then of course, in prison
they find themselves within a violent institution that reproduces violence. In many ways
you can say that the institution feeds on that violence and reproduces it so that when the
person is released he or she is probably worse. So how does one persuade people to think
differently? That’s a question of organizing.”
We are scholars, physicians, city planners, students, parents, blue collar workers and
union members, teachers, artists, musicians, church leaders and goers, community members
and some of us are survivors of the criminal justice system. And I think that we have
been able to and will continue to organize in tremendous ways because… that is what we do!
I’ve seen how passionately all of you care about this county and the people in it;
especially those most abused and robbed by the criminal justice system. Let’s continue to
fight for justice for Toya, Paul, and Veronica [three people who recently died in
Champaign County jails within a six-month period] and Black men and women most at risk
for abuse by the system.
Let’s continue to organize together despite our political differences. Let’s create
community alternatives to this kind of deceptive and ridiculous BS, and let’s crush this
referendum this Fall. Thank you for all that you do.
People leaving the Board Meeting found that the front doors and windows of Brookens
Administration Building, Champaign, Il, were anonymously covered with messages calling for
divestment from jails, investment in community, and an end to anti-Black racism.

(Note: This text was written in 1884 and published in a magazine socialist Chicago, United
States. The text was thought from a perspective Eurocentric and clasista of Historically,
if not with accents even racist on peoples indigenous colonized by Europeans for being
robbed of resources under the guise of "development and civilizing." In this respect, the
allegations of "primitivism" peoples denigrated by Europeans as "inferior" should be
understood as an effect of thinking colonizing Europeans, and not the positions of the
left, but as the injustice perpetrated by capitalism, against which socialists,
communists, anarchists must fight. How deep are the roots of this thinking shows what
"European values" and talks about what European culture and not about indigenous peoples .
not even Morris was not able to see here an historical injustice, and without trying to
apologize, it must be said that this way of relating to the world of poor and dispossessed
of rights and resources by the West dominates today and is presented as "international
relations" or "international law".)
"The title above might surprise some of my readers. Most people nowadays assume that all
the work is profitable, and most people had as all the work is desirable. Most people,
wealthy or not, believes that even when someone performs a work that seems to be
unnecessary, earn their living through it - is "employee" as they say; and most of the
rich cheer the happy worker with congratulations and praise if it is sufficiently
"diligent" and dispenses with all the pleasures and holidays in the holy cause of labor.
In short, it has become a modern morality of faith that all the work is good for itself -
a conviction convenient for those who live off the labor of others. But what concerns
those who live on the account, I recommend not to go on trust, but consider the issue in
more depth.
To establish, first, that the human species must either work or perish. Nature does not
provide the basic needs for free; We must get through a certain level of effort. Let's see
then if we do not provide any compensation for this compulsion to work, since in the other
matters cares undoubtedly the facts necessary continuity of life at the individual and the
species is not only bearable but even pleasant .
you can be assured that done, that it is the human nature that when not ill man to find
pleasure in his work under certain conditions. Yet, we must say, despite all the
hypocritical praise to all the work, whatever it is, you mentioned that there are some
jobs that are not far from a blessing, but a curse; it would be better for the community
and for the worker if he would together arms and refuse to work, and either die or we
would let him drive away an asylum or prison - you prefer.
Now, notice, there are two types of work - one good, the other evil; one approached a
blessing, a joy of life; the other just a curse, a burden for life.
What then is the difference between the two? This: one offers hope, the other not. It is
an act of courage achievement of one of the types of work, and also an act of courage
denying the other.
What is the nature of hope that, when present in the work, makes it worth the effort?
Is Triple think - hope rest, product hope, hope of pleasure in the work itself; and I hope
they are also in some abundance and good quality; sufficient rest to deserve good quality;
products worthwhile one that is neither bad nor an ascetic; that sufficient pleasure for
us all to be aware of it when we are at work; not just a simple habit without which we
feel shaken when a man loses his piece of string with playing nervous.
I put hopes rest first because it is the simplest and most natural part of our hope.
Whatever pleasure might find some work, there is certainly an amount of pain all the work,
terrible pain to revive our dormant energies to act, fear of change when things are to our
liking; and compensation for the pain the animal is resting animal. Work must feel when
the time comes that you will not have to work. Also rest when arrives, must be of
sufficient length that allow us to enjoy it; It must be longer than we need to recover our
vigor that we used working and animal should be resting and this is not troubled by
anxiety, otherwise we will not be able to enjoy it. If we have this quantity and this
rest, we will not go at least worse than beasts of burden.
The expectancy of the product, I said that nature compels us to work for it. It is our
duty to take care to produce really something and not nothing, at least not something we
want or we are not allowed to use. If we take care of it and we will use our leads at
least better than machines.
Hope pleasure in the work itself: how strange this must seem hope some of my readers -
their majoritatatii! But I think that all beings feel pleasure in driving their energies,
and even enjoys animals to be nimble and quick and strong. But man realized something that
works and feels that there will be because he is working to achieve it and wants it,
exercising the energies of mind and his soul and that of his body. Memory and imagination
helps him while working. Not just his thoughts, but thoughts of the people of the times
that went guides his hands; and he, as a part of the human species creates. If we work in
this manner we will be people, and today will be happy and memorable.
So work properly carries the hope of pleasure from rest, hoping pleasure of using fruits
and hoping pleasure offered by our talents creative everyday.
All work otherwise it is worthless; It is slave labor - a mere toil to live, to live to work.
Therefore since we have, as they say, a balance to weigh the work that is currently in the
world to use. Let us weigh the value of work which we realize after so many thousands of
years of toil, after so many promises of hope deferred, so much jubilation unbounded to
the progress of civilization and gains freedom.
Now, the first thing on work done in civilization and the more noticeable is the way it is
distributed very unequally between different classes of society. First there are people -
and not a few - who do not work, nor pretend to. Then there are people, even many who work
long enough, but has advantages and abundant holidays, claimed and granted; and finally
there are people who work in so much that you might say that I do something besides work,
and are therefore called "working classes", to be distinguished from the middle classes
and the the wealthy or the aristocracy, which I mentioned above.
it is clear that this inequality weighs heavily on class "working" and certainly tends
clearly to destroy at least the hope of rest, and so in this respect his bring in a state
worse than beasts of burden from the fields; but this is not the end of our madness to
turn work useful toil useless, but only its beginning.
For the first in the class of rich people who do not work at all we all know that they
consume a lot while not producing anything. Therefore clearly they are maintained at the
expense of those who work, and those who beg, and are just a burden to the community.
Nowadays there are many who have come to see this, although I can not look deeper into the
evils of our current system, and has not formed any idea to be rid of this burden;
although they may have a vague hope that changes in the system of electing members of the
House of Commons could lead, as if by magic in that direction. With such hopes and
superstition should not bother. Moreover this class, the aristocracy, though very
necessary for the State, is small in number and has no power of its own, but depends on
the support beneath her class - the middle class. Actually consists either of the most
successful people in that class, or their direct descendants.
In the middle class, including people from trade, manufacturing and specialists in our
society, they seem, as a rule, work pretty and so much at first sight could be considered
as useful members of the community, and not a burden for her. But most of them even work,
produce nothing, and even when they occur, as in the case of those employees (the prodigal
really) in the distribution of goods, or doctors, or the artists (authentic) and men of
letters consume disproportionate to the part that they deserve. Those of them involved in
the trade and manufacturing, the strongest hand, consume their lives and energies fighting
each other for the corresponding parts of the richness of forcing workers to provide real
to them; others are almost entirely dependent upon the latter; they do not work for the
public, but for a privileged class: they are parasites property, sometimes, as in the case
of lawyers, without hiding it; sometimes, as if doctors and others mentioned above,
claiming to be useful, but too often no benefit out of being supporters of the system of
insanity, fraud, and tyranny to which they belong. And all this we must remember that rule
have one goal in mind; not achieve useful things, but getting a position either for
themselves or for their children that will not have to work at all. It is their ambition
and purpose of their whole life to obtain, if not for them, at least for their children to
be proud status obvious burden for the community. For their work itself, despite dignity
feigned that surround it, do not care in the least: except for a few enthusiasts,
scientists, art, or letters unless they are salt of the earth, they are at least (and yes,
pity him) salt system miserable whom are slaves, which prevents and his counters at every
turn, and sometimes corrupts.
Here we have then another class, this time very numerous and powerful, which produces very
little and consume enormous and are therefore largely maintained, like pauperii, the real
producers. Class to be considered produces all things that are produced and maintained
both himself and the other classes, although it is placed in a position of inferiority
towards them; a real inferiority, attention, involving both degradation of mind and body.
But it is a necessary consequence of this tyranny and absurdity that turn many of these
workers are not producers. Much of her once again are mere parasites on the property, some
of them openly, as if soldiers in the field and at sea which are used for perpetuating
rivalries and animosities national and purpose of the national struggle for distributing
fruits unpaid work. But besides this burden apparent to manufacturers and therefore no
less obvious servants internal, there first army officials, vendors, and so on, which are
employed for the benefit of war private wealth, which as said above is true occupation
prosperous middle class. This is a larger number of workers than you might think, because
it includes among others those engaged in what I would call competitive art to sell, or
use a word less worthy, laudable goods, which now reached such a level that there are many
things that cost a lot more to be sold only costs to be made.
Then there is the mass of people employed in manufacturing all those luxury items and
stupid, whose application is the result of the existence of the richer classes and
non-productive; things people would live a human life and uncorrupted would not ask nor
did they would like. These things matter who contradict me, I will always refuse to
consider welfare: no welfare, but wasteful. Welfare is what nature gives us and what can
make a reasonable man of the gifts that nature provides for the use must be reasonable.
Sunlight, fresh air, pristine appearance of the earth, food, clothes and housing and
decent necessary; storage of all kinds of knowledge, and the ability to disseminate them;
free means of communication between people; works of art, the beauty that man creates when
it is fully human, the most inspiring and profound - all things that serve people
pleasure, free, human and uncorrupted. This is welfare. I can not even think of anything
that was worth and not fall into one of these points. But think about it, I beg of
products England, workshop of the world, and will not be you troubled as I am, the thought
of this mass of things that no sane man would not be like, but that our useless toil
produce - and sell them?
Now, further there is even sadder industry that is forced on very many of our workers -
manufacture of the goods they need them and their brethren, for they are an underclass.
For if many people live without cause, nay, must have lives so empty and stupid that
forces much workers produce articles that nobody needs, even the rich, that means most
people should be poor; and living this way on wages from those caretakers can not use
those goods that people want naturally but must make do with improvisation miserable, the
food of poor quality that is not nutritious with rotting clothes that do not protect,
houses pathetic that I could make an inhabitant of urban civilization in the past to look
with regret the tent nomadic tribe, or primitive prehistoric cave. Moreover, workers even
have to give a helping hand to the great inventions of the industrial era -
counterfeiting, and using it to produce for his own forgeries and appearance of luxury of
the rich; For employees should always live as command payers of wages and habits of their
life they are forced by their masters.
But it is a waste of time to try to express in words due contempt for the production much
- vaunted ieftinataturi the times our. Must be sufficient to mention that this cheapness
is required for operating system on which the modern industry. In other words our society
comprises a large mass of slaves to be fed, and entertained as slaves, and that their
daily needs they compel to produce articles of slavery whose use is perpetuating their
bondage.
To summarize then, regarding the manner in which work is carried out in civilized
countries, these states are composed of three classes - a class that does not claim to
work, a class pretending working, but not producing anything, and a class that works, but
the other two classes are forced to do work that is often unproductive.
civilization thus wasting their own resources, and will continue to do so as long as the
current system will endure. These are words to describe cold tyranny under which we
suffer; then try to consider their significance.
There is a exact volume of natural materials and natural forces in the world, and an exact
amount of labor inherent to those people who live people. People forced their needs and
desires have worked for thousands of years with the task of subjugating the forces of
Nature and transform their natural material into something useful. To our eyes, because we
can not look ahead, that struggle with Nature seems almost completed, and the victory of
the human species on its almost complete. And on past the time when history began first
grasp the progress that victory was much faster and more creepy in the last two hundred
years ever. Surely then, we moderns should get better in all respects than all those who
have lived before us. Certainly each of us should be wealthy to be fine-tuned with the
good things that our victory over Nature has obtained for us.
But what is the reality? Who would dare to deny that the mass of civilized people are
poor? In so poor that they are it is ludicrous to bother discussing whether they live in
some respects better than their ancestors. They are poor; nor poverty can not judge their
relative poverty of an uncivilized without resources, since it does not know anything
other than his poverty; that we must be cold, hungry, be homeless, dirty, ignorant,
however, they are as natural to him as the fact of having a skin. But for us, for most of
us, civilization has given rise to desires that we forbidden to meet, and thus is not only
a failure but an executioner.
So we were kidnapped fruits of our victory over Nature, thus constraining from Nature to
work with the hope rested, benefit, and enjoyment were transformed into the human
compulsion to work with hope - to live in order to work!
Well, let us remember once again that our distant ancestors had achieved victory over
Nature, but our parents and even ourselves. As we sit helpless and hopeless as when crazy
strange indeed: surely we can rectify. What is then the first thing to do?
We have seen how modern society is divided into two classes, one of which has the
privilege of being maintained by the labor of another - meaning that forces the other to
work for it and deprive the underclass of everything can get from it, and use the wealth
thus obtained to maintain members own in a superior position, to turn them into beings
with a higher status than others: longest, more beautiful, more honorable, more
sophisticated than those the other class. I do not mean that concern its members to be
categorically longest, beautiful and refined, but insists that they must be such relative
to the lower class. And because labor can not use lower class honestly to produce real
wealth, to produce a wasting nonsense.
This robbery and keep waste from most impoverished minority; if it could demonstrate that
it is necessary for submission to the preservation of this society, little jump could add
on this matter, so that only despair oppressed majority would most likely destroy the
company at a time. But demonstrated the contrary, even through such experiments
incomplete, for example by (so called) Cooperation, that the existence of a privileged
class is not in any way required to produce wealth, but rather for "governance" producers
of wealth, or in other words supporting privileges.
the first step to take when the abolition of a class of privileged people who evade their
debts from people, thus forcing others to do the work that they refuse to do so. Everyone
must work according to ability it has, and thus produce what they consume - namely
everyone to work as best he can for his own maintenance and dependents ought to be
ensured; ie all the benefits that society could provide to each of its members.
This would finally put the foundations of a genuine companies. It would be built on
equality of condition. No man would have struggled to his neighbor - nay, no man would be
tormented for society. Indeed any order which is not supported for the good of each of its
members may call the Company.
The senseless worker walking back home
But since people now live in so badly, since many people do not produce really nothing,
and so much work is wasted, it becomes clear that given that all would produce and the
work would not be wasted, not only that everyone would work with the sure hope of getting
a fair share of work, but also with certainty that it could lose the proper rest. Here
there are then two of the three kinds of hope that we mentioned above as an essential part
of an adequate work insured worker. When plunder class will be abolished everyone will
harvest the fruits of his labor, everyone will enjoy the rest due - that respite. Some
might say that the Socialists should not go further than that; it is sufficient that the
worker to obtain the whole product of his labor and his leisure should be plentiful. But
although human tyranny constraint would thus be abolished, I ask further constraint
compensation for Nature needs. As long as work is repulsive will still be a burden to be
raised daily and even so we would disturb life, even if working hours would be few. What
we want to do is add our welfare without diminish our enjoyment. Nature will not be fully
conquered until our work is part of the pleasure in our lives.
That first step to free people from unnecessary work under the constraints it will place
at least on the way to this happy ending; for if we have time and opportunities to
perform. As things are now between labor wastage and squandering its simple inactivity
unproductive work it is clear that world civilization is supported by a small proportion
of its population; when all will work effectively for its support, the work that should
make each one would be smaller if our standard of living would be based on one whom the
rich and refined today considers desirable. We have surplus labor and shortly we shall be
so rich as we are. It will be easier to live. If we wake up one morning now under the
current system and we find it "easy to live", that system would force us to start to work
immediately and would make it difficult to live; we should call it "development of own
resources," or something like that. The multiplication of labor has become a necessity for
us, and as long as this continues no ingenuity in inventing machines will not be of any
real use. Each new machine will produce a certain amount of suffering among workers whose
disturbing a particular industry; and so many of them would be transformed from skilled
workers in unskilled workers and then gradually things will come right on track, and all
will work again apparently without hindrance; and if this would not prepare the revolution
it would be for most of them the same as it was before the wonderful new invention.
But when the revolution will to be "easy to live" when all will work harmoniously together
and there will be no one to rob worker of his time, that his life; in those days to come
there will be no compulsion for us to produce things that we want, no compulsion to work
for nothing; we will be able to calmly and carefully decide what to do with the wealth of
our labor power. Now, for my part, I think the first use that we should have for that
wealth, for that liberty would be to turn all our work, even the most mundane and
necessary in a pleasant one for all world; for thinking the matter carefully you can see
that the only direction that will certainly make happy life in front of all accidents and
troubles is to have an interest that gives pleasure in every detail of life. And if by
chance you think that such a statement is too universally accepted that it can be done,
let me remind you how a ban across modern civilization; what sordid details, and even
terrible surrounding the lives of the poor, which requires mechanical life of the rich and
empty; and what feast rare it is for each of us to feel a part of Nature, and to note
slowly, carefully and joy during our lives in the midst of small rings of events that
connects them with the lives of others and build great whole of humanity.
But in such a celebration could turn our whole lives if we decide to turn all our work in
a reasonable and pleasant. But we have to be really determined; for half measures will not
help us here. It has been said already that our work joyless today, and our lives as
frightened and restless life of a hunted animal, are imposed on us by the current system
of production for profit of the privileged classes. It is necessary to show that it
entails. Under this system, wages and capital "manufacturer" (absurdly named for a
producer is a person who produces with his hands) having monopoly over the means by which
the power to work existing in the body of each man can be used for production is master of
those who are not as privileged; only he can use this workforce, which on the other hand
is the only commodity through which "share" his work is the product of accumulated past
can be made productive for it. Therefore he buys labor of those who lack capital and can
survive only by selling them; his goal in this transaction is to increase the capital of
the breed. Obviously, if I would pay those who conclude the transaction with the true
value of their work, that is what they produced, would fail in achieving this goal. But
since he has a monopoly on the means of production, may compel to a transaction best for
him and against them; that transaction is that after they have enough product for their
needs, measured a pattern sufficiently high to allow subjecting their peaceful before his
possession, the rest (and by far the highest percentage) of what they produce them will
return it will become his property as he wishes and decide what to do with it, how to use
and abuse at will; that property is, as we all know, carefully guarded by the army and
navy, police and prison; Short of that huge concentration of physical force that
superstition, customs, fear to die by starvation - in a word Ignorance among the masses
deprived of property, allows classes to use appropriated land for subjecting their slaves.
Now, at other times other evils resulting from this system can be highlighted. I want to
emphasize now is unable to get work attractive under this system, and repeat that this
robbery (no other word to describe it) dispels the available workforce of the civilized
world, forcing many people to do nothing, and very many others do nothing useful; thus
forcing those who truly useful work performed to over-work extremely burdensome. To
understand once and forever that "manufacturer" is primarily intended to produce under the
work they stole from others, not goods but profits, namely that "wealth" which is produced
in addition to basic needs its workers, and its equipment wear. If that "wealth" is real
or is charlatanism not matter in the least for it. If we make a "profit" is only good. I
said that since there are rich people who have more money than they could spend in a
reasonable way, and therefore wealth buys false, there is waste on this side; and also
because there are poor people who can not afford to buy things that are worth making, and
on this side there is waste. Such "demand" that "provides" capitalist is a false claim.
Market where it sells is "rigging" the miserable inequities created by robbery Capital and
Payroll system.
We must therefore be resolute in our rid of this system if we want to achieve a work that
is delightful and beneficial to all. The first step to making work attractive one is the
transfer of funds to enable work to be fruitful capital, including land, machinery,
factories, and so, in the hands of the community, to be used for the good of all equally,
so that we can work all the "replenishment" "requests" real to each of us - that work for
basic needs, instead of working to fill applications market profits - instead of work for
profit, ie instead of power compel the other people to work against their will.
when this first step will be done, and people will begin to understand that the will of
Nature is that all people either work or starve, and you will not be so suckers that allow
them some alternative to steal when this happy day arrives, we shall be relieved of duty
wastage, and therefore we find that we have, as I said, the amount of working capacity
will allow us to live as we like in some reasonable limits. We will not be in a hurry and
constrained by fear of starvation, currently in press in the same way most of the people
in communities civilized and primitive simple. The most important and obvious needs to be
secured so easily in a community where there is no waste of work that we have time to look
around and decide what we really want and that can be achieved without over taxing energy
our; for fear often expressed towards idleness pure that will envelop the force is
provided by the hierarchy of the current constraint will be withdrawn is a fear that is
generated from the burden of overwork and repulsive that most of us have to bear now.
I say again, it is my belief that the first thing we consider necessary intractable enough
to merit killing of an idle time will be the attractiveness of working. There will be huge
sacrifices necessary to achieve that objective, but some will be needed. For we can be
confident that people who have just gone through a period of struggle and revolution will
be the last to accept for a long life simple utilitarianism, although Socialists are
sometimes accused by ignorant persons that want to reach such a life . On the other hand
decorative component of modern life it is already deeply rotten and must be completely
removed before the new order of things to be done. There is nothing in it anything that
may result from this that can meet the aspirations of people freed from the tyranny of
commercialism.
We need to start building up the decorative life - its pleasures, physical and
intellectual, scientific and artistic, social and individual - based a work undertaken
voluntarily and cheerfully, with the knowledge that will be useful to us and our fellow
men. One such work is absolutely necessary, that we will have to realize, we will require
in the first instance, only a small portion of every day, and so will not be burdensome;
but it will be a daily task with a recurring character, and therefore affect us everyday
pleasure, unless it would provide at least one character suporbabil how long it would
take. In other words all the work, even the most trivial, must be made attractive.
How can this be achieved? - Is the question whose answer I will use for the rest of this
paper. Offering some guidance on this question, I am aware that while all Socialists will
agree with many of the suggestions made, some of them might seem strange and foolish some
of them. They must be considered as being made without any intention to dogmatise, and
only as an expression of my own opinions. From everything already mentioned that work to
be attractive must be directed toward an obviously useful purpose unless it is voluntarily
undertaken individually as a way of amusement. This feature utility obvious need more
heeded sweetened tasks that would otherwise be annoying, since social morality, human
responsibility towards human life, will take place moral theology in the new social order,
or man's responsibility to an abstract idea. Then workday will be shortened. There have
insisted on this topic. It is clear that without wasting labor can be shortened. It is
also clear that much work is now a torment would be borne more easily if it is shortened.
The diversity of work is the next point, and a very important. Coercing a person to
perform the same tasks day after day, without any hope of escape or change, means nothing
less than the transformation of his life in prison excruciating. Just outside the machine
of tyranny chopped profit does this need. A man can easily learn and practice at least
three trades, alternating with sedentary occupations outdoor calling to train a strong
physical energies to the mind work had to be done. For example there are few people who
would like to spend a portion of their lives in the most necessary and most enchanting
work of all - farming. One thing that will allow this diversity of occupations will be the
form it will take education in a community socially organized. Currently all the education
is directed with the aim of preparing people for taking the place in the hierarchy of
trade - that they possess, as those workers. Masters education is more decorative than
that of workers, but all commercial; and even the oldest universities learning is only
taken of, if not be profitable in the long term. Relevant education is a different thing
and is concerned with discovering things that are suitable for different people and
support them in the way that they are inclined to grasp. Therefore a properly organized
society youth should be trained in crafts like those for which they would have an
inclination as part of their education, discipline their minds and bodies; and adults
would also have opportunities to learn in the same schools, for the development of
individual abilities would be of all the most important goal of education and not now
subordinating the whole of capabilities to the grand goal of "made money" for themselves -
or master. The volume of talent, or even genius, that the current system it crushes and
would be brought to the surface of such a system would make our everyday life easier and
interesting.
In this aspect of diversity will call a product of the industry that has suffered in so
much because of commercialism that we can hardly say that there is really so foreign to
our age that I am afraid that there will be some who will find difficult to understand
what I have to say on this matter, things that all they have to say, since you are truly
some of the most important. I refer to that branch of art is, or should be, done by
ordinary worker while performing his work obsinuite, which came to be called, rightly,
Folklore. This art, I repeat, there is currently being killed by commercialism. But from
the beginning of the struggle between man and nature and to the rise of the current
capitalist system it was alive and generally prospered. How long has resisted all man-made
objects were beautified by man, as everything is done by Nature is adorned by it. The
craftsman, as it gave form of work they perform, decorate it so naturally and so
effortless aware that it is often difficult to determine where to end the actual utility
of his work and where the decorative began. The origin of this art was the need he felt
the worker to have diversity in his work, and although the beauty created by this desire
was a great gift to the world, achieving diversity and enjoyable work by worker was an
issue and more importance, for all the work print with pleasure seal. All this kind of
work civilization disappeared. If you want decorations have to pay particular therefor,
and the worker is compelled to produce soft as it is constrained to produce other goods.
He is compelled to mimic happiness in his work, so that the beauty created by man, and
which was once a exhilaration of his work, has now become an additional burden for him,
and the decorations are now just one of crap toil unnecessary and can not the least
annoying of its chains.
Outside of the short duration of work, its usefulness conscious and diversity that should
accompany, there is a necessity to make it attractive and pleasant environment that is.
Suffering and misery that we humans of civilization as we incur with complacency as a
necessary feature of the production system is as necessary for the community in general as
well as a proportional amount of trash in the private house of a rich man. If such a man
would allow slag to be scraped all over the room its a latrine to be created in every
corner of the living room of his, if they make a habit of storing waste in his garden once
beautiful, if not it never wash the sheets and would not change the tablecloth, and would
compel the family to sleep five to a bed, would certainly wake up in the clutches of a
lunatic asylum. But such gestures are avaricious madness exactly what our current society
under the compulsion of an alleged daily needs, which is nothing but foolishness. I
implore you to head towards civilization insane asylum without delay.
For all our cities and factories busy disorienting are nothing but the result of the
profit system. Capitalist production, capitalist property on land and capitalist forces
people exchanges in cities in order to manipulate the benefit of capital; adequate space
shrinks same tyranny of the factory in so much that (for example) of a big weaving
workshop is a show almost as ridiculous as it is creepy. There is no other need for all of
them, except no need to grind profits from people's lives and to produce cheap goods for
the use (and obedience) that are chopped slaves. Not all work is involved in factories;
often where there is a need for this, except, again, tyranny-profit. There is no need for
people engaged in work of this kind to be forced to live together in crowded neighborhoods
dirt. There is no reason that they should not be able to practice occupations in the house
quiet country, colleges of industry, small towns, or in short, where are most happy to live.
In that part of the work is required association widespread, even this system of
factories, under a social order reasonable (although after my mind there might exist some
shortcomings) would provide at least possibilities for a social life full and passionate
surrounded by many pleasures. The factories could also centers of intellectual activity
and work they could be very diverse: routing equipment necessary for each person could be
only a short part of the working day. Other work could range from collecting food from
nearby rural areas to study and practice of arts and science. This is self-evident that
people engaged in such work and who would be masters of their own lives, would not allow
any worries or lack of precaution to force them to endure the misery, disorder or lack of
space. Properly applied science would allow them to get rid of dirt, minimize, if not
completely destroy all the inconvenience that currently accompany the use of machinery
complicated things like smoke, stench and noise; nor would accept working or living in
buildings are ugly blemishes on the face of the earth cared. Since converting factories,
buildings, and workshops in some decent and convenient as their homes would still surely
transform them not only into some negative things, totally harmless, but also beautiful,
so wonderful art of architecture, currently while butchered by greed commercial, would be
reborn and would flourish.
So you see, I argue that work in a community organized properly should be made attractive
conscience usefulness of achieving its interest in intelligent, diverse, and exercise was
amidst a pleasant environment. But I also argued, as we do all that work day should not be
annoying long. One can ask, "How can you make this last assertion to be accepted by
others? If the work will be so refined, so they will not get very expensive goods produced? "
I admit, as I said, that some sacrifices will be needed for the work to become attractive.
I mean, if I be satisfied as a free community to work in the same manner rushed, messy,
disordered and heartless as far I could shorten the day Our forward work much more than
they are of the opinion that we will, taking into account all kinds of work. But if we do
this, it would mean that our new won freedom condition would make us careless and
pathetic, if not anxious as we are at the moment, so that I find simply impossible. Should
we be satisfied with the realization of the sacrifices necessary to raise the standard of
our condition considered desirable by the whole community. And not only this. Should the
individual to willingly want to sacrifice yet more of our time and tranquility for raising
living standards. People either by ourselves or partners for such purposes would,
willingly and love of work and its results - boosted by hopes pleasure of creation - those
ornaments of life for the benefit of all, which are currently bribed to produce (or
pretend to produce them) for the benefit of a few wealthy people. Experiment a civilized
communities which live entirely without art or literature has not yet been conducted.
Degradation and decomposition of old civilization could impose this denial of pleasure on
society will be reborn from the ashes. If this is the case, we accept transitory phase of
utilitarianism as a foundation for art come. Unless will find infirm and poor in our
streets, if the land will feed us all the same, whether the sun will shine for all the
same, if for all without exception, drama wonderful earth - day and night, summer and
winter - will be presented like things to be understood and loved, we can afford to wait a
while until we have purified the shame decomposition past, and until the art will be
reborn again among some people freed from the terror felt by slave and shame thief.
Meanwhile, however, refining, forethought and care work must indeed paid, but not by
compulsion to toil long hours. Our time has invented machines that would have seemed like
dreams crazy for people in times past, and those machines have not yet found any use.
These are called equipment "saving jobs" - a phrase often used suggesting what to we
expect from them; but we do not get what we want. What I can really do is reduce the
skilled to unskilled level, to increase the numbers "army reservists labor" - ie to
increase the precariousness of life among workers and intensify the work of those who
serve machines (such as slaves serve master). However they do, by the way, while work
piled profits and forcing employers to expand those profits into a trade war between them
harshly. In a society true miracles of ingenuity would be employed primarily to minimize
the unattractive time devoted to work that through them could be reduced to such a degree
as to constitute only a very light burden to everyone. All the more since these machines
would certainly be much improved from the time that would not also whether their
improvement would "make money" for the individual, but rather whether it be community
service.
So much use the usual machinery, most likely after a while will be somewhat restricted
when people find out that there is no need for anxiety for mere existence, and when people
learn the interest and pleasure of manual labor that made voluntarily and care, could
become more attractive than work machines.
again, once people free from the terror of daily starvation will find out what îsiDin
again once people free from the terror of daily starvation will find out what Isidore
really, no longer constrained by anything beyond their own needs, refuse to maiproduca
mere nonsense what are now called luxury items or poisons and waste cepoarta now called
cheap goods. Nobody would produce crotch luxury you would not maiexista snobs who would
serve, nor would anyone waste time producing oleo cândnimeni would not be compelled to
refrain from real butter. Laws against counterfeiting suntnecesare only in a society of
thieves - and in such a society are a dead letter.
The Socialists are often asked how they could carry out the harshest work and repulsive in
the new conditions. Trying to answer such questions fully and firmly would try unable to
build an outline of a new society from the materials of the old, before knowing which of
those materials would disappear and would endure developments that will lead to great
change. Yet it is hardly conceivable type of arrangement in which those who would do the
rough work should work in the shortest range. And again, what has been said above about
diversity work especially applies here. Once again I say that if a man should be employed
throughout life without hope to perform a task repulsive and endless, it is an arrangement
sufficiently suitable to describe hell imagined by theologians, but hardly showed any form
of society. Finally if this work rough will be any lower case character, one can imagine
that volunteer specialists would be required to perform them, and that would certainly be
available, whether people are in a state of freedom lose Sparks the courage they held as
slaves.
Yet if there is any work that could only be repulsive, either by the shortness of its
life, or intermittent to, or special character and distinctiveness of its usefulness (and
prinurmare honor) of the human mind which carry the free - if there is any type of the
work that can not only have a torment for the worker, what do we do then? Well, let's see
if the heavens will fall on us if we leave undone, for it would be better if they do it.
The result of such work can not justify the cost.
Now I could see that semi-theological dogma says that all the work, regardless of
circumstances, is a blessing for the worker, it is hypocritical and false; that, on the
other hand, work is good when accompanied by appropriate hoping rest and pleasure. I
weighed civilization work and found it waiting since generally lacks hope, and thus we see
that civilization gave birth to a terrible curse for people. But I saw the world and that
work could be done with hope and pleasure, if he had not wasted madness and tyranny of
incessant conflict between antagonistic classes.
Peace therefore we need to live and work in hope and happy. So desired peace if we trust
in the words of men, but was rejected by them always and firmly works. But for us, get to
work and to acquire at any cost.
What might that price, who can tell? It will be possible to gain peace peacefully? Alas,
how could it be so? We are so constrained by irregularities and madness that somehow or
another we must always fight with them our own lives might not catch the end of this
fight, no hope can finally clear. It may be that the best thing we can hope to get to a
sharpening and a fierceness of that struggle from day to day until he breaks out altogeth

Message: 3
Committed since the beginning of the movement against labor law in a sometimes
uncomfortable Inter approach the Trade Union Solidarity managed to find its place among
the major central while imposing radical slogans widely shared and disseminated locally.
---- At the end of February after the announcement of Bill El Khomri, communications of
the Inter Solidaires which is a member seemed to favor the "social dialogue" with the
government at the expense of a clear opposition. It was not until the success of the event
of March 9, called primarily on the Internet, for the most combative unions appear on the
street and take their responsibilities by engaging in the preparation of a one-day strike
and demonstration 31 March.
If United, with its 110,000 members, is not as important as the heavyweights that Inter
are the CGT (700,000) or FO (250,000), the Union Syndicale was nonetheless able to bring
from there the words of 'combative order and anchor them in the newspaper.
Interprofessional frameworks developed in local and departmental unions helped to debate
wherever possible the issue of the ongoing strike and economic blockades.
Push to increasingly close dates
From the national day of action on March 31, Partners worked to push, in the Inter, at
times becoming reconciled to encourage departures indefinite strike from May, wherever it
was possible.
The guiding idea of Solidarity was to hold a mobilization pace to popularize the refusal
of the Labour Law, workers and allow workers to ascertain their number in the street, to
regain confidence and credibility as the idea of renewed strike .
May 3, Solidaires causes a stir by publicly calling for renewed strike at the unit
meeting, Place des Invalides in Paris, on the occasion of the first reading of Labour Bill
to the National Assembly. This appeal helped give other perspectives in the field to union
members for whom the strike days spaced one or two weeks was not possible to engage the
fight in their area. But it was a gamble. It was that this appeal be followed by action on
the ground. While running through May, the rest of the Inter saw this voluntary position
as an incantatory posture, mobilization of working people has shown that a strong movement
of strikes and economic blockades possible. Defend this growing pace in the mobilization
was associated with a democratic functioning and the use of tools to promote transparency
such as internal newsletters fed local news and circulated to all members and all.
Occupation of the basilica of Saint-Denis
This control strategy is however not obvious to take for Solidarity, which today has no
means alone to build a majority strike "blocking sectors" (chemical, refineries,
transportation, docks and port areas ...) and remains weak in the private. However, the
union members have managed to boost es at the local level, interprofessional group to
popularize the strike and mobilization beyond sectoral frameworks that prevail even in a
movement of magnitude. These collective interpro are carriers of radicalism, first in the
modes of action - it is usually these that drive economic blockades - but also in the
political content, since the debates leading to it rise, by force things above strictly
sectoral issues.
The development strategy of local Solidaires, developed in 2009, is paying off: unionism
does not live only on the workplace but interprofessional manner, in neighborhoods. Thus,
in Saint-Denis, Partners participated on the sidelines of a Night Stand, the occupation of
the basilica with the DAL and families evicted from their homes. In Rennes, it was the
involvement in the regaining of the old labor exchange: the "House of the People" became,
for a time, a place of meeting and debate for the anti-Labour.
These aspirations were expressed in the activity of a number of federation or SUD unions.
SUD-Rail was so used to bind own claims to the railway movement against the Labour Act,
despite the reluctance of other railway unions. Similarly, SUD-Education tried
successfully in view of the growth of its processions in Paris for example, converging
struggles against insecurity in the national education and the fight against labor law.
Dealing with all the sensitivities
The radicalism displayed in the street by Solidarity therefore results although the
alternative that is worn every day on the field. While the social movement have seemed at
times torn between a traditional trade union movement so far stalled, a spontaneist
autonomous environment and more citizenists forms of the type standing Night, Solidarity
was able to deal with all the sensibilities of the social movement without breaking score,
while affirming its strategy: to convince that this is a massive strike that win.
The demonstrations were a key point of contention positions Solidaires who managed in a
climate more than tense, maintaining structured and combative marches to completion
ensuring the safety of comrades who were there .
The success of Solidarity in the street announces a strengthening of struggle unionism,
local unions and interprofessional dynamics that brought it. Remains to be seen if this
will allow Partners to set up more widely in the private. This will be its ability to
cause whole sectors in the strike that will enable Partners to weigh more heavily in the
Inter but especially in the social movement. The links today in fighting between militants
of Solidarity, the most combative unions of the CGT, youth movements and precarious
victories will decide tomorrow.
