7,500 year old burial found in Iran


A 7,500-year-old skeleton of an adult man has been discovered in Sar Sakhti-ye Olya village in Shazand in central Iran, say local news reports.

Fathollah Niazi, the head of the excavation team, stated that the man had been buried in foetal position facing eastwards, "probably towards the sun".

A number of artefacts, including a turtle shell and several grinding tools, were also found buried with the man, he added.

Niazi further pointed out that the skeleton's excellent state of preservation was due to “the type of soil and the existence of elements such as lime, very low levels of acid and high amount of salt.”

The skeleton has since been transferred to the Chahar Fasl Museum in Arak, the capital of Markazi province where it will be displayed to the public.
