WEEDING THE HEART!

In the Gospel, the Lord narrates the parable of the wheat and the weeds. The master of the harvest planted good seed, but his enemy planted weeds in his field. God created our hearts good and capable of seeing what is right and doing it. The enemy plants in the same hearts the inclination to evil, due to which we often abandon what is right in spite of the earlier determination and pledges. The master in the parable knows that it is his enemy that did this to him. He has patience to let the two grow together, knowing that in spite of the presence of the weeds he can still get fruits from his garden.

When we have failed in our promises to God we need to remember that God understands us better than we understand ourselves. He knows our keen desire to please him. He also has confidence that in spite of our failures, we can still bear good fruit. The danger for us would be to allow the weeds over power the wheat through discouragement and despair. The right thing
is to never give up, but continue with the struggle until some fruit is borne in spite of the ever present discomfort of sin and the inclination to sin in us.

Prayer: Jesus, may Your saving Word remove the roots of sin from within my heart. Amen.

Prayer of St. Alphonsa: O Lord Jesus, hide me in the wound of your sacred heart. Free me from my desire to be loved and esteemed …make me one with you. Amen.
