Just yesterday I was writing about the death of Newspapers.
Ironically, the front page article of the Record, my local paper detailed that it had been sold to the
Gannet Organization.
Sold
Yes , Gannet of the thin sheet paper style. USA today and others of type which contain half a section devoted to the weather map. Newspapers that are designed solely for the use of those who addictively must feel the rub of processed wood pulp and printers ink on their hands first off in the m morning. Newsprint smell to waken the senses.
So I will miss The Record and some of the writings of some of its people, some of whom I have corresponded with over the years. How can I be certain that they will be gone and there will be change, well one only need to look at the family of papers of Gannet to know this.
I sort of knew this was part of the logical progression when I saw a fourth of July OP Ed piece written by our local great slice of life observer, Christopher De Vinnk. The piece was not so much a celebration of our freedoms and our heritage of freedom as it was a hatchet job on Donald Trump.
In that decision to write the piece and the editor to publish the piece, it was revealed that each pridefully assumed that they knew more and better than their readers. It was this type of editorializing that has caused the readership to reject the newspapers outright. It is this type of prideful attitude that has caused Trump's ascendency. There no longer was conversation with the readership so much as it was an edict from on high. People do not like to be told what to do, they like to feel as if they have a say in what they choose to do, after due consideration of alternatives. We categorically reject the holier than thou approach to anything these days because we have seen too much of it that is false.
We have seen the foibles of the Kennedy dynasty, the faults of the Bishops, the disrespect of a Bill Clinton, John Edwards, Jimmy Swaggert , Jim Baker. We know that all people have faults and so please do not pretend that you don't as you rail at us to be better than we are or to be compliant with your directives. This is what the papers failed to see, they required us to be liberal and free of judgment to accept all as okay, even if it meant that we needed to totally suspend good judgment and cultural difference. We, the people in our right rejected this notion and took our business elsewhere.
But powers and pundits can not seem to grasp this , they don't recognize it , they will never see it and it may very well be that it will overwhelm them. Many given the choice will hold their noses and throw the lever for Trump as a means of telling Washington and the Parties and the Pundits that enough has become enough. I mean isn't it clearly enough that the Democratic Party could not give us anyone other than Hillary Clinton as candidate for President, arguably the most duplicitous political operative to have ever existed. I mean a personal net worth of $200 million dollars speaks not to public service but to avarice personally honed .
Sadly, one element of the civil society is dying and it is because they , the editors, allowed themselves to become incivil to their readership. Not unlike the way Church leaders became incivil to their parishoners and followers.
The my way of the highway mentality has infected every discussion and from my viewpoint is only getting worse. Ideals of respectful disagreement and respect of my views and your views coexisting in sort of ebb and flow and harmony are being destroyed . To bad the news people chose to join in and take sides rather than referee.
