A Good Read Maybe
Read for real
Over the Memorial Day Weekend, which could not have come soon enough for the likes of my wife and myself, could not come soon enough for we have had insufficient time off. We are typically American in that respect, insufficient time to kick back and do nothing or at least do things of personal enjoyment. Every day I pass by my canoe tethered to a rack near my home and say, "I need to pull that down and paddle to the end of the lake in the cool of the early morning." My wife thinks to herself that a couple of hours spent reading on the front porch or a little longer in bed in the morning would be nice. For us Memorial Day weekend holds some of that promise, even if we did far to little of it in actuality.
I read the newspaper on Sunday. Sunday has the opinion section, which I love. For I like to see what others are thinking about anyone of the sundry topics of concern. I love seeing the letters to the editor, mostly being written by idiots. Idiots being defined obviously by the fact that they don't seem to agree with my own ideas.
But this Sunday was a rare treat, for it marked a departure for my newspaper in that they had a couple of guest writers. So we all got a break from their conscious attempt to ramrod us with the leftist , swishy hogwash that comes out of the editorial offerings of the Washington Post, offerings which my newspaper cuts and paste onto its own OP ED pages. It would not be so annoying if it were not for the fact that some days that is all there is on the page. If there is one lesson we have all learned and taken to heart is that Washington Post Pundits really don't know the first thing about what they spew about. But my paper still gives them a Launchpad. Even as they have become laughing stock they still grasp to the idea that they have relevancy, which makes them all the more laughable.
How many of them boldly predicted that Bernie Sanders would kick Clintons ass across the country ?
Not a single one. How many of them had Debbie Wasserman Schultz looking like a jerk by this time in this year ? Not a one. Don't even mention Trump in their presence for mere mention causes apoplexy in the class. Andrea Mitchell and Chuck Todd with egg running down their chins can't even get anyone to listen let alone watch them. It is a liberating notion that these twits have not greater claim to knowledge than the neighbor or the storekeeper down the street.
But at any rate this past Sunday there were tow standout articles. One of which dealt with a man I heard speak several months ago. My brother in law invited me to hear his talk and it was amazing.
I wrote about it some months back.
The other treat was in the form of the Chritopher De Vinck story. De Vinck is one of my favorite essayist, probably more for his ability to weave an artful picture with words than for the mere fact that he is local. This time he annoyed me somewhat, not a bad thing, with his discussion of demagoguery . We all look to Trump to fill that description failing to note that all of the other candidates equally deserve the title, and how is it that they escape scrutiny. Clinton has long held that position , but is never called on it. But annoyance is not a bad thing if it causes you to think about the reality and the reality is that all the candidates safely can be titled demagogues.
I know where it is to be found, but fear that no one wants to confront the reality of where it is.
Think about where you would find the soul of America or even if you believe there to be one and in that way you can disagree with my own thoughts at to where it is and what it is, when I reveal the secret next time. Oh, yeah, remember what I said about those who would disagree with me above.
