SALVIFIC LOVE OF GOD!
“This is love: not that we loved God but that he first loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 Jn 4: 10). The feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the celebration of the ‘salvific love’ of our God. The God who loved us so much that he gave his only Son as an offering for the world. This love of God is symbolized through the heart of the incarnated Son of God. The word ‘heart’ stands for the ‘love’ of a person. Therefore people say; “I love you with all my heart”. And when we are celebrating the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus the Church invites us to reflect on the love of God; that love which is manifested in the person of his Son Jesus Christ.
It is God who chose Israel to be his people. He consecrated them and chose them out of many other nations. Not because of their power or strength, but rather only because of his love for them. This is what Moses is teaching the people of Israel. He is reminding them of the great love of God for them. God’s love for his people is infinite and unconditional. He always loved his people and loves them despite their defects and shortcomings. Therefore when humanity was caught up in sin he offered his only son for them. Therefore we have to experience this love so that we may understand it and become true admirers of God. Only then can we love him with all our heart and mind.
So on this feast day of the Sacred Heart, we express our gratitude to our Lord for the great love that he continues to shower on us. Let us experience that great love of God for us, so that we will be enabled to show love towards others.
Prayer: Lord, guide us towards your unfathomable ‘Love’. Amen.
