Also, a note was published: PROTECTING WATER QUALITY *BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF SURFACTANTS*, a 2006 technical monograph, begins with a chapter entitled, "Anthropogenic Impacts and Synthetic Surfactants as Pollutants of Aquatic Ecosystems," a clear signal as to author S. Ostroumov's concerns and focus. The hardbound work is said to provide a foundation for exploration of how hazardous wastes are absorbed in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The text presents information on actions required for remediation and restoring water quality. Approaches to counteract "toxic effects of man made surfactants using biological methods, including phytoremediation," are also discussed in the 296-page work, as well as protection measures to improve water quality. - IPMnet NEWS, October/November 2006, Issue no. 150 (ISSN: 1523-7893): http://209.85.135.104/search?q=cache:jV5iVD86ExwJ:www.ipmnet.org/IPMNews/2006/news150.html+Ostroumov+S.&hl=ru&ct=clnk&cd=196

Ermakov V.V. (Prof., Head of Lab. of Biogeochem., Russ. Acad. Sci.) About the book S.A. Ostroumov «Aquatic organisms in self-purification of water and the biogenic migration of elements» // Water: Chemistry and Ecology. 2009. No. 8. p.25-29. Bibliogr. 26 refs. A new theory for the biomechanisms for water self-purification is presented in the S.A. Ostroumov’s book ‘Aquatic Organisms in Water Self-Purification and Biogenic Migration of Elements’ (2008, 200 p.). Hydrobionts (aquatic organisms) are actively involved in various processes leading to water purification. Almost all main groups of organisms are involved, which is discussed and analyzed in the paper. In the theory, the results of the author's experiments on the effects of various pollutants on aquatic organisms were used. The theory is an innovative basis for new ecological technologies to clean water and to upgrade its quality by using aquatic organisms.

Article: | On studying the hazards of pollution of the biosphere: Effects of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) on planktonic filter-feeders(the authors of the paper under review: I M Vorozhun; S A Ostroumov) |
http://5bio5.blogspot.com/2014/07/review-of-on-studying-hazards-of.html
This is a first paper to report the discovery: chemical pollutant (a surfactant) decreases the water filtration by zooplankton, namely, daphnia. This toxic effect took place at a relatively low concentration of the chemical (a surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate, or SDS). This discovery is in agreement with the previous publications and discoveries of Dr. Sergei Ostroumov (Moscow State University). His previous research demonstrated that the same chemical pollutant decreased (inhibited) water filtration by some other water invertebrate animals, namely, bivalve mollusks. The new discovery is important. The new fact demonstrated a new hazard from the chemical pollutants even at their low concentrations.
The new fact confirmed the conclusions of the previous publications of Dr. S. Ostroumov. The new data added additional evidence on serious environmental hazards from synthetic surfactants. These chemicals pollute water ecosystems.
Conclusion: This paper presented important new facts. These facts are really relevant. The publication is of outstanding interest to many scientists who study ecology, environmental pollution, environmental toxicology, aquatic ecotoxicology. I recommend this excellent article.

First paper: gold, uranium, other chemical elements in biodetritus;
This is the first paper to report concentrations of gold, uranium, other valuable chemical elements in biodetritus (i.e., biological detritus) in sediments in aquatic system. The author, a Fulbright Award winner, conducted innovative and unique experiments. For a number of months, he has created a biological detritus in an experimental water ecosystem.
This detritus was generated by both plant and animal aquatic organisms in this water ecosystem. After several months, he collected the detritus and measured the concentrations of a number of chemical elements including gold, uranium and some others (some interesting rare earth elements among them).
As a result, he obtained absolutely new and unique data on the biogeochemical role of biological detritus in aquatic ecosystems.
The chemical elements that were found and measured in the biological detritus were:
Ca, Zn, Ba, Br, Ce, Se, Nd, La, U, Hf, Sb, Th, Sm, S, Cs, Au.
This article is absolutely innovative. I recommend it for reading and citation. It will be very useful to all who study chemical ecology, aquatic ecology, biobeochemistry, sediments in water systems.

Excellent book. New useful system of facts, ideas on nature conservation. The full and more correct reference is:
Yablokov A.V., Ostroumov S.A. Levels of Living Nature Conservation. 1985. Nauka Press. Moscow. 176 p. DOI: 10.13140/2.1.1679.9366.
The book presented a fresh, unique and innovative approach to analysis of issues of nature conservation. The authors invented a new productive conceptualization of the new science of conservation biology. They proposed and used a very efficient approach. This approach is based on the concept of levels of organization of living systems. As a result, the authors, prominent biologists, transformed a huge mass of facts on anthropogenic effects on nature (man-made impact on living organisms, the biota, the biosphere) into a well-organized system of scientifically treated data.
The book presented also a unique system of axioms of nature conservation.
The book was translated into some other languages.
The citation of this book is excellent.
This unique, innovative book was ahead of its time, it will be useful to many who are involved and interested in nature conservation and environmental protection. It is really very useful and recommended to scientists, professors and students.

New step in creating theory of water self-purification in ecosystems - this is the short summary of this excellent innovative paper. The article under review is a well-balanced review, and an opinion paper with the 53-reference list of cited literature. The paper summarizes the author's productive research on aquatic organisms that are involved in water purification in ecosystems, and his new experimental data. His new results demonstrated how man-made chemical pollutant (exemplified by a synthetic surfactant) inhibits (slows down) the useful process of water filtration by water-dwelling mollusks (freshwater mussels Unio tumidus)(a table 5 on page 310). Also, he obtained new data on the inhibition by a synthetic detergent (a laundry detergent) of water filtration by this freshwater mollusk (Unio tumidus), these data are presented in Table 6 on page 311. A valuable review of the author's other related and relevant results of his experiments with other organisms and chemical pollutants is given in Table 7, on page 311. This Table 7 includes his important findings of biological toxic effects of other pollutants, namely synthetic surfactants and heavy metals, on marine mussels, oysters, and two species of rotifers. The author created a new very useful theory of water self-purification. A valuable part of this theory is presented in the form of a large table (table 1 page 306), which presents a well-organized list of processes and factors that contribute to water self-purification, with interesting comments. I rate this very useful and innovative article among the top publications in aquatic ecology. I recommend this excellent paper to all who are involved in freshwater and marine ecology, limnology, biological oceanography, water resources, environmental toxicology, and environmental protection.

The text of the review:
In this paper and in the preceding publications by the same author (a Fulbright Award winning researcher at Moscow State University, Dr. Sergei A. Ostroumov) a new scientific discipline, new science was created. This new science is biochemical ecology. The author of this term and the father of this science, S. Ostroumov, published his fundamentally innovative book, Introduction to Biochemical Ecology, in 1986. This book was ahead of its time. This book is still ahead of our time. The conceptually new term proposed by this author is 'ecological chemomediators'. In the paper under review an additional explanation of this new term is given. This term is a general name for a great many of various natural chemical substances which are produced by organisms and convey /deliver some signal or regulatory effect on / to other organisms. An example are pheromones. However, not only pheromones. There are many other signals and effects that are delivered via natural chemicals. In the paper under the review, the author discusses and explains these important considerations.
The subject of biochemical ecology - after publishing this revolutionary innovative book in 1986 - became a new university discipline, a new lecture course in many universities worldwide. The book, Introduction to Biochemical Ecology, was translated into two other European languages. The paper under the review is a good continuation of the book. I predict that it will be given more and more attention in future. I predict a new citation of this paper. I recommend it to all who are interested in new developments in ecology and biochemistry.

The text of the review:
I will cite this excellent top paper entitled: The Concept of Aquatic Biota as a Labile and Vulnerable Component of the Water Self-Purification System. - Doklady Biological Sciences [proceedings of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Biological sciences sections; in English, translated from Russian] 2000; 372(2): 279-282. This article is innovative and useful. Prior to publishing this paper, the understanding of aquatic ecosystem structure and function was very limited and outdated. This excellent paper added much innovation to our knowledge of aquatic ecology. The paper discovered new aspect of the ecological mechanisms to improve water quality in natural freshwater and marine ecosystems. The paper formulated new aspects of the important role of aquatic biodiversity in improving water quality. The author, Dr. Sergei Ostroumov, carried out new experiments which discovered that this vital function of aquatic biodiversity (in upgrading water quality) is labile (changeable, not stable) and vulnerable to chemical pollutants (exemplified - in his experiments - by synthetic surfactants and detergents). It is a really superb innovative article. I plan to cite this excellent paper. Paradigm shift (in other words, a big change in conceptual framework in that area of science) made by this paper:
The conceptual framework in science, Before this paper:
The primary function of ecosystems was thought to be: primary productivity;
The conceptual framework in science, After publishing this paper:
It became clear that the primary function of ecosystems is not only primary productivity but also conditioning of their environment; in the case of aquatic ecosystems it is conditioning of aquatic environment, i.e. water self-purification.
Why it is important:
It is a contribution to scientific basis of water safety, water sustainability.
What happened afterwards, the further development in publications:
After publishing this paper, the same author published a series of other articles with new data. The new articles confirmed the ideas and conclusions of this paper.

This is a fundamental top paper. The paper presented fundamental elements of a new useful theory of water ecosystem function. This is a theory of how aquatic ecosystem functions towards improving water quality (water self-purification). In terms of fundamental ecology and pure science, it is a solid contribution to finding secrets of ecosystem stability and self-organization. In terms of applied science, this is a useful contribution to scientific understanding of the vital ecosystem service, namely, maintaining water quality (making it clean and clear). This is a contribution to environmental safety, water sustainability.
The paper created an ecological theory of biological self-purification of water, in other words, the theory of multi-functional role of the biota (sum of organisms) in water purification and pollution control.
More recent publications by the same author, a Fulbright Award winning researcher with experience of doing research in best laboratories of U.S., U.K., Russia, and other countries, confirmed this theory.

Text of the review:
Review. Ecosystem definition. New Definitions of the Concepts and Terms Ecosystem and Biogeocenosis.
This is a fundamental contribution to ecology, a top paper. Prior to this paper no satisfactory ecosystem definition existed. The ecosystem definitions of ecosystem in many textbooks on ecology are outdated, vague, naive, and self-contradictory. Usually these definitions included other scientific terms which in turn required their definitions that usually - in open or hidden form - were based on the concept of ecosystem. As a result, a vicious circle took place. The creator of the concept and verbal expression 'ecological system' did not even try to give a definition, in his famous paper [Tansley, A.G. (1935). "The use and abuse of vegetational terms and concepts"].
The paper under review [New Definitions of the Concepts and Terms Ecosystem and Biogeocenosis, by S. A. Ostroumov] is absolutely unique, carefully innovative, and totally useful. The author, Fulbright Award-winning scientist Dr. Sergei A. Ostroumov avoided all of the defects of ecosystem definitions that were mentioned above.
His definition is clear, modern, in simple words, without oversimplification, without logical self-contradictions. It is correct, usable and useful.
Dr. Sergei Ostroumov is the author of a series of research papers and books which covered different areas of ecology. He did his research on both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms, on both autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms. He had experience in organismal biology and in biochemistry and chemical ecology. Moreover, he had experience in teaching in universities in Russia and the U.S.A. This broad experience gave him a solid basis for a well-balanced approach to the difficult task of formulating a modern ecosystem definition.
It is interesting that in the same paper the author modernized another key term which is being often used in Russian scientific literature and less known in Western Europe and the U.S. This term is ‘biogeocoenosis’ (proposed by Prof. Sukachev in the 1940s). This term is - to a degree – an analog of ‘ecosystem’. This term have not been modernized since the 1940s so that Dr. Sergei A. Ostroumov did a really commendable job of updating the both terms (ecosystem and biogeocenosis).
THE CONCLUSION: I would like to give my very strong recommendations to this really useful article. The need for a modern ecosystem definition will increase with time. The value of this article will increase. It will be well cited.
