In an historic vote this week, Italy voted 372-51 in favor of same-sex civil unions. While there is still work to be done, the approval of the civil union law is a milestone in the struggle toward legal recognition for same sex-couples in Italy.
Change has come rapidly in recent years for the LGBT community. While being openly gay can be challenging and even dangerous in parts of the world, 21 countries – including the US – have legalized same-sex marriage.
This was unthinkable in the early 1990’s when Dutch parliamentarian Boris Dittrich and his colleagues began – and, years later, won – their lonely quest for marriage equality in the Netherlands. Boris, now head of advocacy for Human Rights Watch’s LGBT division, has devoted his adult life to advancing the cause of LGBT rights, from helping protect LGBT people from discrimination and violence to toppling the barriers to same-sex marriage. Along the way, he even met Harvey Milk, the US’s first openly gay politician and San Francisco icon. Here’s Boris’s story. share on:  |
