Myanmar: Free all prisoners of conscience | ||||||
Dear friends, Early this month, Myanmar's newly elected government took office. Myanmar's parliament is now filled with former prisoners of conscience, and Aung San Suu Kyi herself has taken on the role of Foreign Minister. The newly elected National League for Democracy (NLD)-led government can either use political will to change the deeply repressive policies that have for years fuelled arbitrary arrests and repression, or they can maintain the policies they will inherit. It is critical that the world hold these leaders accountable. Make an urgent contribution to support our global campaign calling the new NLD-led government to immediately and unconditionally release all prisoners of conscience. In a November 2015 interview with Radio Free Asia, Aung San Suu Kyi stated "There should be no political prisoners in a democratic country." The world cannot truly celebrate change in Myanmar until prisoners of conscience like human rights defender Phyoe Phyoe Aung are free. Phyoe Phyoe Aung is a young student activist jailed last spring for helping lead student protests against a law that would limit academic freedom. She could face up to 13 years in prison. Now is the time for Myanmar's new leadership to end the cycle of politically motivated arrest and imprisonment once and for all. Can you imagine the headline? "Myanmar's new government releases all prisoners of conscience." We can make this a reality. Donate and support this incredible moment in history.
