back by people fighting for a society based on principles of direct democracy, gender
equality, and sustainability. From the their revolution in 2012 they have created a de
facto autonomous region in which this ideas are being implemented. ---- At this opening
session of the 2016 Dublin Anarchist Bookfair we heard from eyewitnesses to the revolution
including those from the region. ---- The region is known to Kurds as Rojava and these
events are commonly referred to as the Rojavan revolution, reflecting the fact that the
revolution was initated and led by Kurdish forces, even though now they are building a
much broader coalition known as the Syrian Democratic Force.
The political system of Rojava is inspired by democratic confederalism and communalism. It
is influenced by anarchist and libertarian principles, and is considered by many a type of
libertarian socialism. The basic unit at the local level is the community which pools
resources for education, protection and governance. At a national level communities are
unrestricted in deciding their own economic decisions on who they wish to sell to and how
resources are allocated. There is a broad push for social reform, gender equality and
ecological stabilization in the region.
The speakers in order of appearance
Janet Biehl who writes about libertarian municipalism and social ecology, the body of
ideas developed and publicized by Murray Bookchin. Bookchin's writings have been credited
with having a huge influence on Kurdish freedom movement in the region and thus on the
revolution.
Ayse Gokkan is a woman activist from Northern Kurdistan (Turkey), representative of KJA
(Free woman Congress of Kurdistan), an organisation formed early in 2015 to advance
women's struggles in this part of the world, gathering different women in Kurdistan, not
just Kurdish, also Syriac, Armenian, Allawis, Yezidis, etc.This is a community based
association organising along communal lines through 501 delegates. She was mayor in
Nusaybin for the BDP-HDP party (2009-2014). In 2013 she was on hunger strike demanding
that Turkey stopped building a wall at the border in order to isolate Rojava.
Elife Berk is an activists and member of the KJA (the Free Women's Congress). She will
discuss the current situation in Kurdistan, including the ongoing conflict, child deaths,
and the imposition of curfews.
Erjan Ayboga is an active member of the Mesopotamian Ecology Movement and was involved in
a campaign to oppose the damming of the Tigris river. His latest book, 'Revolution in
Rojava', will be published in English in July.

writing of Anne Enright in the School of English, Maynooth University. Her research
interests lie in contemporary Irish women's writing, cultural theory, and feminist
philosophy. She has been an abortion rights activist for several years, and is a founding
member of the Abortion Rights Campaign
Theresa O'Keefe researches and writes on feminist resistance. She will speak about the
relationship between feminism and republican armed struggle in the north of Ireland during
the troubles.

In a few days we will commemorate the year of the "famous" police raids in the homes of

I was interested to read on your site articles on illegal home searches and other bullshit
from the police and I decided to share with you about my recent experience with the
police. The mission of the police as anarchists probably doing great illusion, but for
someone it might be surprising how illegal and totalitarian practices of today 'guardians
of the law "are used. The main reason why I am writing you, but that I made some stupid
mistakes. They stemmed partly from my family situation to a great extent but it could have
ignorance of the law, especially what the police can afford. I do not want to repeat the

My answers about the cop did not like, so the threats began: "Can we blame you for some of

Obviously she's very upset. To be clear, my friend is not an anarchist, about my friends
or other things he knows nothing, and her testimony in this respect for the police

to blackmail me that it would scare my girl pregnant, if I am not testify.
A further week later he appeared again at work. This time I threatened to do me problems

Anzac Day always seems an appropriate occasion to restate the anarchist opposition to war,
and reiterate that it is never in the interests of the working class to support war. ----
The anarchist case against war arises from our analysis of, and opposition to, capitalism.
Capitalism is the cause of modern war. The insatiable hunger for profit generates a
relentless search by the various capitalist powers for markets and sources of raw
materials. Modern war is in reality an extension of “business under capitalism” carried to
an extreme of violence, where the economic rivalries between the various national sections
of the capitalist class can no longer be peacefully resolved or controlled. ---- Despite
the story that the First World War started because of the assassination of the Austrian
emperor’s nephew Archduke Ferdinand by Serbian nationalists, the reality was that it was
the outcome of years of conflicting capitalist interests. British and French capitalism
was being challenged by the rising expansion of Germany, both in Europe and abroad. When
Germany showed in 1911, by sending a gunboat to the city of Agadir, that they intended to
get a foothold in Morocco, the then Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK, Lloyd George,
at once reacted with a speech threatening war.
In this tense international environment the crisis that would produce war on a Global
scale was probably inevitable. The “Austria-Serbia dispute” was merely the spark that
ignited the conflagration.
Anyone who preaches peace and disarmament without calling for an overthrow of capitalism
have yet to demonstrate how these objectives can be realised, or how trade and export of
capital can expand without violence being the outcome.
The abolition of war, and the threat of war, will only be realised with the overthrow of
capitalism and the restructuring of society on the basis of common ownership and
production solely to meet human needs. Such a society would unite the human race without
economic classes, or national barriers dividing us.
Whenever war is fought, for whatever false reasons that are presented to us, and whichever
side is declared the victor, one side is always the loser, and that is us, the workers of
the world.
As workers we need to realise that our enemy is not the worker in other lands; rather it
is the capitalist class at home, and this is a far more important division than that
separating nation from nation.
The fight for anarchism is inseparable from the fight against war. The only way to fight
militarism is to fight capitalism and the state.
The fight for anarchism is the fight for peace.

Day of action against exploitation ---- Sunday 1st May, 3pm at the Clock Tower ---- In the
current climate, the powerful and their media have no choice but to aknowledge that
something is not right in their paradise. It is no longer possible to hide the fact that
our living & working condittions are rapidly going from bad to worse. ---- We are facing
increasing exploitation at work with low pay and insecurity. A decent house is
unaffordable even if you work hard. We face discrimination and criminalisation if we are
black, women, migrant, disabled or belong to a vulnerable group, and... if you become
homeless or dare to claim benefits: the lifestyle you have chosen is not acceptable, as
the media and state officilas are there to remind you.
Meanwhile, your boss, your landlord and your MP are richer and more powerful than ever but
your problems are apparently not their fault. It must be the fault of migrants, people on
benefits, the EU or God (that is punishing you for your laziness)!
On the other hand, you have the new and not so new faces who are here to make some minor
corrections to the system. You don't need to do anything but vote for them or join their
party.
Given these circumstances, the International Workers Day cannot be a celebration but a
protest. We need to say loud and clear that we don't want to be the cheap workforce of
their companies and the pasive spectators of their political circus.
We, the workers, claimants and tenants, who form Brighton-SolFed, are trying to build an
alternative in our daily experience. We are fighting hard to defend ourselves in our
workplaces and in the streets. If we are given competitiveness, exploitation and ballots,
we answer with solidarity, mutual support and direct action.
We call out to all the Brighton working class to join our May Day activities.

A collective of more than three hundred academics, writers, artists, union and community
activists, appealed to denounce police violence and repression on the young rising
steadily since the establishment of the state of emergency. ---- "Since last November and

This Wednesday, April 20 cops were completely ransacked the offices of the CNT Lille,
Arras Street. After having penetrated, they have meticulously destroyed all the hardware

The anarchist militant Noelia Cotelo, recluse in Topas, Salamanca, takes more than eight
years in prison. He was arrested to comply only 1 YEAR PRISON and MEDIA. The remaining
